Deforestation

What is Deforestation?
• Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of
forested land. Throughout history and into
modern times, forests have been razed to make
space for agriculture and animal grazing, and to
obtain wood for fuel, manufacturing, and
construction.
Here are some facts about
Deforstation
• Fact 1: Forests cover 30% of the earth's land.
• Fact 2: It is estimated that within 100 years,
there will be no rainforests.
• Fact 3: Agriculture is the leading cause of
deforestation.
• Fact 4: One and a half acres of forest are cut
down every second.
Causes of deforestation and forest degradation

• Conversion of forests for other land uses.

• Forest fires: Each year fires burn millions of hectares of forest
worldwide. Fires are a part of nature but degraded forests are
particularly vulnerable. These include heavily logged rainforests
• Illegal and unsustainable logging: Illegal logging occurs in all types of
forests across all continents
• Mining: The impact of mining on tropical forests is growing due to rising
demand and high mineral prices.
• Climate change: Forest loss is both a cause and an effect of our
changing climate.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF DEFORESTATION?
• Forests don’t just provide home to millions of wild animal and plant
species their ability to capture greenhouse gas emissions makes the
earth livable for us all. When humans harm forests for short-term
economic gains, we harm our species’ chances for survival in the long-
term.

• People who live near forests suffer the most immediate impacts of
deforestation.
HOW ARE WE FIGHTING WITH
DEFORSTATION?
• WWF helps reduce forest damage in a number of ways. They
known for their work with industry and the public to
promote more sustainable use of the world’s forests.
• Their paper products helps shoppers identify and support
sustainable forest management
• They improved and expanded the sources of responsibly-
produced palm oil.
• They helped reducing deforestation in the Amazon by 75%
between 2004 and 2012.
What Can We Do?
• There are lots of things we can all do, right now, to
protect the world’s forests. For instance, choosing
recycled paper products and looking for the FSC ‘tick-
tree’ logo when we’re shopping.
• But our diet has the biggest impact. If you haven’t
already, think about moderating the amount of meat
you eat, perhaps considering it a weekend treat. And
experiment with plant-based ingredients instead
The lighter you take the subject
of deforestation, the greater will
it cost in future
