Resilient Packet Ring (RPR)
RPR is a standard designed for the optimized transport of
data traffic over optical fiber ring networks. It works on
wrapping and steering technology

• RPR works on a concept of dual counter rotating rings

called ringlets.
• These ringlets are set up by creating RPR stations at
nodes where traffic is supposed to drop, per flow (a
flow is the ingress and egress of data traffic).
• Resiliency to respond to node failures in less than 50
msec.
• In Karnataka, total 68 RPR’s of UTSTAR make are
deployed at various locations

General issues that can occur with RPR

RPR is one of the stable devices in Multiplay

network. Node may face the following problems
with RPRs:
• Entire ring / T1 is down
• One T2 is not reachable
• OCLAN/DSLAM not pinging
• Services like VOIP/3G/NME/NGN/Wi-Fi/4G are
not working
• Customers are not getting opted speed
One OCLAN / DSLAM is down
• Check for the Downlink MAC in concerned
RPR/Master OLCAN/OCLAN Port.
– If downlink MAC is coming, and NE is not
pinging, contact NOC
• If no Dowlink MAC, check for physical port status
of the Uplink & Downlink of the NE.
• If ports are fine, and Downlink MAC is not there,
check media
• Inform NOC in case of Lightening or Power
Failure, the configuration might have earsed and
need to be re-configured.
• All the Uplinks from T1 to BNG went down
– It’s suggested to take Uplinks from T1 from
different cards, otherwise, in case of card
failure, all Uplinks will go down, and entire
ring will go down.
BNG

T1
• Check NE alarm on the Node
• Check all the Links to RPR-BNG
• Check services working or not. If some
services are working
• Check Mgmt config at Bng end
• If mgmt port down ,shift the mgmt config to
other port.
• Check Led’s on the PPC,OAM,Linecard
• Check Mmgmt Issue if any
Rpr Ip config
• OAM/PPC card of T1 might have failed and Switch over to
Standby is not happening
– Monitor the Equipment once in a day, for proper LED status
on the cards, in case of any suspicious change in LED status,
inform and NOC, and we’ll inspect the card and recommend
RMA if necessary.
• Run –Green and Stable
• Active – Green and Stable (on Active Card)
– Jack out and Jack in both the cards manually and insert one
after the other, and check for LED Status. If the LED Status is
not correct, please contact NOC immediately.
– Always maintain 2 OAM/PPC cards at T1. This can be done,
by taking Standby OAM/PPC card from T2. (This should be
done in case of Emergency only, should not be a regular
practice)
Trouble Shooting for General Problems
Entire RING/T1 is Down – This is a rare occurance
There may be 3 reasons for this:
• Media Break between T1 and adjacent T2’s
– Escalate to STR and Resolve immediately, or contact
NOC for creating Linear Link Creation, for Emergency
Service Restoration at important Nodes.

Services are not working
• If any services are not working, first please check,
whether connected NE is pinging or not.
• If connected element is pinging and only services are not
working, check for the MAC details.
• Both, Uplink and Downlink MACs should be visible in the
next element (RPR/OCLAN/DSLAM) [Uplink MAC will
come from Uplink port and downlink MAC will come from
Downlink Port, where the element is connected]
• If Uplink MAC is not coming, contact NOC
• If uplink MAC is reaching upto last mile, then check with
corresponding Vendors/Media

• We are now offering upto 10Mbps BW for each
customer. Imagine at least 30 Active subscribers at any
point of time, and minimum required Uplink Capacity for
each DSLAM is 300Mbps.
• Consider at least 10 DSLAMs are working in a OCLAN,
at least 3G Uplink capacity is required for OCLANs. If it
is not available, slow speed issues will come.
Steps to Improve Speed

• In Karnataka, there are still OCLANs working on

fe Uplink, this should be resolved immediately.
• All DSLAM Uplink toward OCLAN are to be
upgraded to 1G.
• Try to connect most of the DSLAMs to RPRs so
that, BW issues will be less and protection
towards fiber cut will be more.
• Upgrade the connectivity of all DSLAMs to GE
ports in RPR/OCLAN
OCLAN(Other City Local Area Network)

 OCLAN is a L2 switch connected to RPR

and aggregates the number of NEs (like
DSLAM ,GPON OLT, Wi-Max BTS,3G
BTS) in every OC cities.
 In Karnataka, total 174 ZTE OCLANs are
working.
ZTE OCLAN-ZXR10 T64G,T160G

• ZXR10 T160G/T64G system is composed of chassis, power supply plug-in

box, board, fan plug-in box and backplane.

• ZXR10 T160G and ZXR10 T64G adopt same hardware structure with
control/switching board and various line interface cards shared, only the
number of line interface cards supported are different. In ZXR10 T160G, 8

plugged in.

• ZXR10 T160G/T64G hardware design includes the following four modules

– Control module
– Switching module
– Packet processing and interface module
– Power supply module

• Control switching board (MCS) is the core of ZXR10

T160G/T64G,implementing the functions of control module and
switching module. The control switching board provides the function
of master/slave switchover; it can also perform 1+1 redundancy
configuration.
• Console interface is used to connect background management
terminal, on which it performs operation and maintenance to ZXR10
T160G/T64G via tools such as Super Terminal.
• 10/100Base-TX Ethernet interface (MGT) on the control switching
board is the management interface connecting background, which can
be used as the switch outband NM interface.
• ZXR10 T160G/T64G line interface card includes: Fast Ethernet
interface board, gigabit Ethernet interface board and 10gigabit
Ethernet interface board..

Remedies for General Issues in OCLANs
• Upgrade all OCLAN Uplinks to GE Immediately. Configuring
Multiple Uplinks should be explored.
• Do not connect any OCLAN in Master-Slave manner. Connect
a OCLAN to T1/T2.
• For Slow Speed Issues, please follow the same procedure
discussed, if everything is fine, check the speed at
DSLAM/OCLAN port and send the screenshot to NOC
through Remedy.
• For new provisioning, if DSLAM/OLT/Services not working
after initial configuration, check for the Uplink & Downlink
MACs.
• If Uplink MAC is not present in OCLAN, contact NOC.
• If Downlink MAC is not present in OCLAN, check with the
DSLAM/OLT/Service Provider and Fiber connectivity in
between.

Steps to be taken to improve QoS
NIB In-charge plays a major role in BSNL Broadband Wing,
and they are the bridge between outdoor and NOC.
• They should have all the information in hand
• They should be able to do basic troubleshooting, as soon
as a problem is reported
• Identification of problem solves 90% of the problem and
resolution can be done to the point
• Report any issue, to NOC after Identification of problem.
We can give you immediate resolution. If problem
identification is to be done from our side, it will invite delay.
• Make use of NMS to the maximum extent and contact
NOC for Critical Notifications and Alarms
• Try to explore new ways to utilize NE effectively
Steps to be taken for better QoS
Consistency is the key of success and always try to explore
new ways to utilize the NE effectively.
• Always connect T1/T2 in Ring only. Do not connect linearly.
• Always connect OCLANs on GE
• Utilize GE ports of RPR for multiplexing DSLAMs/ILLs
• Different Node B’s can be configured through single port of
RPR/OCLAN
• During PM activity, make sure that all the problems are
escalated to vendors
• Monitoring the Temperatures and Power levels on daily basis
through NMS

NOC will be ready 24x7
to extend support for
Major issues.
