Industry Challenges
de Três Lagoas

There is an increasing trend to reduce freshwater usage in pulp and paper

Industry with several consequences to the papermaking operations.

• Increased process conductivity and brightness losses

• Increased recycling rates leads to more ashes and fines
• Contaminants build-up ( pitch, stickies, microbio… )

For the Papermakers the consequences are quality and productivity losses

• Breaks, holes, sheet defects, strength loss, odors…

• Increased chemical spend ( Bleaching, Sizing, RA, Defoamer, DSR, WSR… )

Kemira has developed technology to help customers to reuse more process

water and reduce freshwater usage.

Our role in the value chain de Três Lagoas

Water in Pulp and Paper Industry

• Fibers, water and energy prices
have increased, environmental
legislation is becoming stricter…

• Kemira provides expertise and

tailored solutions for WQQM with
dedicated experts and R&D
resources

• We enable our customers to

improve their water, energy and
raw material efficiency

Water recycling and reuse is a must for our

customer but also an opportunity for Kemira Water is only rented, it has to
to gain a competitive edge in the market be returned to the
environment…

Market needs
Celulose e Papel
de Três Lagoas

(Sludge dewatering, DAF, settling aid for clarifiers… )

 Effective solid-liquid separation is critical to maximize the water reuse

 Kemira’s new co-polymers have been developed to work in challenging
conditions to provide customers improved solid-liquid separation for Sludge
press, DAF and clarifiers.
 Kemira’s new Co-Polymers represent a real game changer in processes with difficult
conditions where performance of “conventional’ polyacrylamides is less than
desirable.
 We are seeing higher benefits in mills with the following conditions:
• Highly closed process
• High conductivity process, bleaching filtrates
• NSSC, BCTMP, DIP and Sulfite mills
Up to 50% polymer
reduction was
achieved in such
conditions !

Conclusion
de Três Lagoas

Our new co-polymers are engineered for dual fixation and flocculation in one product.

These co-polymers are manufactured with optimal charge distribution, and inside the
polymer structure, the size and number of building blocks are controlled.

We have learned that these new products represent a real game changer in processes
with difficult conditions where performance of “conventional’ Polyacrylamides is less
than desirable.

We help our customers to improve their operations and reduce their water
consumption by providing a solution to boost their solids-liquid separation and
contaminants removal
