1)Class 1: Explosives
have a fire/blast/explosion hazard .
2)Class 2: Gases
• Class 2.1: flammable gases
• Class 2.2: non-flammable,
• non-toxic gases
• Class 2.3: toxic gases
3)Class 3: Flammable liquids

4)Class 4: Flammable solids;
Class 4.1: flammable solids, self-reactive substances
Class 4.2: substances liable to spontaneous combustion
Class 4.3: substances, which, in contact with water, emit
flammable gases
5)Class 5: Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
Class 5.1: oxidizing substances
Class 5.2: organic peroxides

Marking, labeling and placarding

1)Packages containing dangerous goods shall


be durably marked with the correct technical
name; distinctive labels or stencils , so as to
make clear the dangerous properties .
2)Packages surviving at least three months’
immersion in the sea.
3)Packaging materials used should be durable.
4) Certificate of packing to be issued.

SHIPPER RESPONSIBILITY
SHIPPER TO DECLARE AND ISSUE CERTIFICATE
1)Classification of the DGs
2)Quantity to be loaded
3)Proposed stowage
4)Type of packages
5)Proper Shipping name(PSN) – that is the correct technical
name
Segregation required from other cargo as well as from other
DG
6)MFAG(Medical first aid guide) and EmS ( Emergency
schedule)requirement for the safe handling of the cargo
7)Any fire hazard as per IMDG
8)Any temperature/ wetness restriction for the loading of the
cargo
9)Emergency contact list.

DOCUMENTS
1)Each ship carrying Dangerous Goods should
have a MANIFEST setting forth the DGs on
board and the location thereof.
2)A detailed stowage plan, which identifies by
class & sets out the location of all DGs on
board, may be used .
3)A copy of one of these documents is to be
given to the Designated Port Official prior
departure.

Applicability of IMDG

1)Applicable to DGs in packaged form only.


2)Not applicable to ships stores and
equipment.( E.G. Pyro-techniques on
bridge , Paints in paint store.
3)Not applicable to bulk liquid chemicals ,
oils & gasses.

SHORT NOTES
1) SUBSIDIARY RISK: MEANS ANY OTHER RISK
WHICH THE CARGO MAY POSSES OTHER THAN
THE ONE SPECIFIED BY ITS CLASS. IT IS A
SECONDARY RISK. IF A CARGO HAS TWO RISKS
INVOLVED, THEN IT SHOULD BE MARKED
WITH 2 LABELS STATING BOTH THE RISKS.
2) UN NUMBER : A unique four digit number
assigned by United Nations to each DG for
ready reference , UN No. 1972 : Methane

SHORT NOTES
3) PSN : Proper shipping name = Technical name
= Chemical name , e.g. Ammonium Nitrate
=NH3NO4 Only PSN will be used. Brand or trade
name will not be used.
