TOPIC - RECTIFIER
KIRTI BHARTI
TDHA/098
What is a Rectifier ?

A rectifier is an electronic
device that converts an
alternating current into a
direct current by using one or
more diodes.
Rectifier
TYPES OF RECTIFIER

• HALF WAVE RECTIFIER

• FULL WAVE RECTIFIER
HALF WAVE RECTIFIER

The type of rectifier that converts only

the half cycle of the alternating
current into the direct current is
known as a half-wave rectifier.
FULL WAVE
RECTIFIER
A full wave rectifier is defined as a
rectifier that converts the complete
cycle of alternating current into
pulsating DC.
BRIDGE RECTIFIER

Bridge Rectifiers use four diodes that are

arranged cleverly to convert the AC supply
voltage to a DC supply voltage. The output
signal of such a circuit is always of the same
polarity regardless of the polarities of the
input AC signal
Why is it called bridge rectifier?

Compared with other rectifiers, this is the

most efficient type of rectifier circuit. This
is a full-wave rectifier. As the name
suggests, this rectifier uses four bridge-
connected diodes. So, this rectifier is called
a Bridge Rectifier.
COMPONENTS USED IN
BRIDGE RECTIFIER

• DIODES

• CAPACITOR
DIODES

A diode is a two terminal electrical

device. Diodes are made from a
semiconductor, most often silicon
but sometimes germanium. There
are various types of diodes,
Thyristor, Silicon Controlled
Rectifier, and TRIAC.
CAPACITOR

A capacitor is a device that stores

electrical energy in an electric field.
It is a passive electronic component
with two terminals. The effect of a
capacitor is known as capacitance.
Applications of capacitor

•The capacitor used for storage of energy.

• It is used in filter circuits to minimize the
ripple voltage.
• Capacitors are used to run the motor.
• Bypass the high frequency signals.
• Used in tank circuits in electronic
oscillators.
Working of the Bridge Rectifier Used to
Convert 230V AC to 5V DC
Applications of Bridge Rectifier

 Mobile phone and laptop charger.

UPS power supply circuit to convert AC
to DC.
Home invertors to convert AC to DC.
Audio amplifier
Working of a Mobile Charger
1. At first, the 220-230v AC supply passes through the bridge
rectifier which made by four diodes and then it rectified by the
bridge rectifier.

2.  The DC output is filtrated by a capacitor.

3.  Then 220-230v DC passing through the two transistors and being
converted into a high-frequency AC signal.

4. The high-frequency AC signals again passing through capacitors

for power factor correction and filter which increases the efficiency
of the circuit.

5. Then the filtrate high-frequency AC signal goes to the pulse

transformer which steps down the voltage to 5v.
6.The 5v AC is converted to DC by a diode.

7. The DC output is filtrated by a capacitor.

8. Then the pure DC is supplied to mobile for charge the

battery.
