Obesity
What is Obesity?

Obesity is defined as abnormal or

excessive fat accumulation that
presents a risk to our health.

3
What causes obesity?
There are 5 causes of obesity:
1. Food and activity
2. Environment
3. Genetics
4. Health Conditions and Medications
5. Stress, Emotional Factors, and Poor
Sleep
4
The risks of obesity
Many people have known the dangers of obesity.
In fact obesity is the 5th leading risk for global
deaths. At least 2,8 million adults die each year
as a result of being obese. The percentage of
deaths caused by obesity are as followed:
 44% of the diabetes burden
 23% of the ischemia heart disease burden
 7-41% of certain cancer burdens

5
The Symptoms of Obesity
Body mass index (BMI) is often used to diagnose obesity. To
calculate BMI, multiply weight in pounds by 703, divide by
height in inches and than divide again by height in inches or
divide weight in kilograms by height in meters squared.

Asians with BMI of 23 or higher may have an increased risk of

health problems. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable
estimate of body fat. However, BMI doesn’t directly measure
body fat, so some people such as muscular athletes may have a
BMI in the obesity category even though they don’t have excess
body fat.
6
Many doctors also measure a person’s waist circumference to
help guide treatment decisions. Weight-related health
problems are more common in men with a waist
circumference over 40 inches (102cm) and in women with a
waist measurement over 35 inches (89cm).

When must we see a doctor? If you’re concerned about your

weight or weight-related health problems, ask your doctor
about obesity management. You and your doctor can evaluate
your health risks and discuss your weight-loss options.

7
Treatments for Obesity
Common treatments for overweight and obesity include losing
weight through healthy eating, being more physically active,
and making other changes to your usual habits. Experts
recommend losing 5-10% of your body weight within the first
6 months of treatment. Losing 5-10% of your weight may:
o Help lower your chances of developing health
problems related to overweight and obesity.
o Improve health problems related to overweight and
obesity, such as high blood pressure and high
cholesteral levels.

8
There are many treatments for obesity,
but I will only mention 4 of them

 Health Eating Plan and Regular Physical

Activity
 Changing Your Habits
 Weight-Loss Medicines
 Calorie-Restricted Diet
