WHO REALLY

DISCOVERED
DNA?
THE STORY OF THE
DISCOVERY OF DNA BEGINS
IN THE YEAR....... 1860s

JOHANN FRIEDRICH MIESCHER

AMES WATSON
worked out that DNA is
double helix like a
twisted staircase IN
1953.
FRANCIS CRIC
(flow of genetic information)

DNA Replication
DNA Replication
-two identical copies of
DNA molecules are
produced, which are
exactly the same as the
original.

EXONUCLEASE

LIGASE
LEADING LAGGING STRAND
STRAND
Compare the two
new strands of DNA.
Are they the same or
different?
Why?
10
Each new strand formed is a
complement of one of the original
strands. The result is the formation
of two DNA molecules containing
the original DNA strand and the
complementary daughter strands.
The two new daughter strands are
also complementary to each other.

11
How do the
nucleotides in the
DNA pair?

12
In DNA, cytosine forms
three hydrogen bonds
with guanine, and
thymine forms two
hydrogen bonds with
adenine.

13
The pairing of the bases produces
a long, two-stranded molecule
that is often compare to a zipper.
If you look at a zipper, the sides
of the zipper represent the sugar
and phosphate units, while the
teeth of the zipper represent the
pairs of nitrogenous bases of the
DNA.
14
How is
information from
the DNA passed on
from one cell to
another?
15
Before a cell can divide
by mitosis or meiosis, it
must first make a copy of
its chromosomes. The
DNA in the chromosomes
are then copied in a
process called DNA
replication.
