Propagation Model Tuning
Inputs
Some of the most important inputs are,
1. Survey Data (CW)
2. Clutter grid file
3. Height grid file (with good resolution)
4. Clutter Heights
5. Clutter Separation
6. Power, Antenna information, losses information, etc of the site for
which survey data is collected.
7. Receiver Height per clutter
Work Flow for Model Tuning

Step 1: Collect Survey Data*
• Site Selection
•Site should be little higher than the typical antenna height in the
clutter
•There should be no large obstacles in 300 m area far away from
site
•Site should cover enough area of the clutters that are going to be
classified
•Environment should be easy to drive test
•Survey Data*
•Avoid highways, tunnels and elevated roads
•Avoid data collection on the same path
* This report does not cover how to collect survey data (CW) in detail. Recommended guidelines are in [1]
Step 1: Collect Survey Data (Cont.)
•Averaging:
•Survey data should be modified to remove anomalous survey points and
account for Rayleigh fading.
•Select the survey and choose Analyze Average.
•In the Rayleigh Fading Distance box, type a calculated value. To remove
Rayleigh fading, the recommended aggregation distance is 40
wavelengths. For example, 13 m at 900 MHz, and 5 m at 2400 MHz.
•In the Averaging section, choose one of the following options to average
data points:
a) Area Method—Data points are averaged using the median by
dividing the area covered by the point file into adjacent squares in a
rectangular array.
b) Distance Method—Data points are averaged using the median by
dividing the area covered by the point file into circles that may overlap,
but which include all of the points in the original survey.
Step 1: Collect Survey Data (Cont.)
•Filtering: Typical filters used for post processing include:
•Clutter Class –remove data from inland water
•RSSI –remove points below the noise floor –noise floor based on actual
measurement in the area during measurement collection
•Distance –remove points in near distance, for example within 300 m
•Distance from FSL –remove points higher or close to the Free Space
Loss line
•Latitude / Longitude –remove points beyond a range of latitude and
longitude values
•Manual deletion –points removed in areas where geodata is not properly
represented, e.g. elevated highways, bridges, etc…
Step 2: Configuring Propagation Model
• Select the appropriate Clutter and height grid
•In this example propagation model is tuned for one of the Canadian
Markets
•Following sectors were used for model tuning that complied with the
site selection guidelines
