IT Infrastructure
IT infrastructure
• IT infrastructure:
– Set of physical devices and software required to
operate enterprise.
– Set of firmwide services including:
• Computing platforms providing computing services
• Telecommunications services
• Data management services
• Application software services
• IT management, education, and other services
– “Service platform” perspective
• More accurate view of value of investments
IT Infrastructure
Evolution of IT infrastructure

There are five stages in IT infrastructure evolution:

–General purpose mainframe and minicomputer era(1959 to
present)
–Personal computer era:(1981 to present)
–Client/server era:(1983 to present)
–Enterprise Computing era:(1992 to present)
–Cloud and Mobile Computing era:(2000 to
present)
Infrastructure Components

• IT Infrastructure has seven main components

1. Computer hardware platforms
2. Operating system platforms
3. Enterprise software applications
4. Data management and storage
5. Networking/telecommunications platforms
6. Internet platforms
7. Consulting system integration services
Infrastructure Components

There are seven major

components that must be
coordinated to
provide the firm with a
coherent IT
infrastructure. Listed
here are major
technologies and
suppliers for each
component.
Contemporary Hardware Platform
Trends
The Mobile Digital Platform
–Cell phone, smartphone have assumed data
transmission, web surfing, email and IM duties.
–Smartphones and tablets are increasingly used for
business.
Consumerization of IT and BYOD
– BYOD means bring your own device.
–Consumerization of IT is a new information technology
that first emerges in the consumer market spreads into
business organization.
Contemporary Hardware Plateform
Trends
Grid Computing
–involves connecting geographically remote
computer into a single network to create a virtual
supercomputer by combining the computational
power of all computers on the grid.
Virtualization
– presents a set of computing resources so that
they can be accessed not restricted by physical
configuration or geograghic location.
Contemporary Hardware Platform
Trends
Cloud computing

– a model of computing in which computer

processing, storage, software, and other services are
provided as a pool of virtualized resources over a
network.
Contemporary Software Platform
Trends
Cloud computing
– "Services" perspective
• cloud infrastructure as a service: customers use
processing, storage, networking and other computing
resources.
• Cloud platform as a service: customers use infrastructure
and programming tools by the cloud service providers.
• Cloud software as a service: customers use sofware hosted
by the vendor on the vendors cloud infrastructure and
delivered over a network.
Cloud can be public and private.
Contemporary Hardware platform
Trends
Green computing
–refers to practices and technologies for designing,
manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers,
servers, and associated devices and communication
systems to minimize the impact on the environment.
High Performance and Power-Saving Processors
– A multicore processor is an integrated circuit to which
two or more processors cores have been attached for
enhanced performance, reduced power consumption and
more efficient simultaneous processing of multiple tasks.
Contemporary Hardware Platform
Trends
Autonomic Computing
– an industry- wide effort to develop systems that
can configure themselves, optimize, and tune
themselves, heal themselves when broken, and
protect themselves from outside intruders and self -
destruction.
Contemporary Software Platform
Trends
•Open-source software:
–Produced by community of programmers
–Free and modifiable by user
–Examples: Apache web server, Mozilla Firefox
•Linux
–Open-source OS
–Used in mobile devices, local area networks, Web
servers, high performamce computing.
Contemporary Software Platform
Trends
•Software for the Web
–Java: an operating system - independent, processor-
independent and object-oriented programming language.

–HTML: a page description languages for specifying how text,

graphics, video, and sound are placed on web page and for
creating dynamic links to other web pages and objects.

–HTML5: a latest evolution Includes animation and video

processing functionality previously provided by third party
add-ons such as Flash.
Contemporary Software Platform
Trends
• Web service
–a set of loosely coupled software components that
exchange information with each other using universal web
communication standards and languages.
• XML
–a more powerful and flexible markup language than
hypertext markup language.
• Service-Oriented Architecture
–set of self-contained services that communicate with
each other to create a working software application.
Contemporary Software Platform
Trends
Software package and enterprise software
– a prewritten commercially available set of software
programs that eliminates the need for a firm to write its own
software programs for certain functions.

Software outsourcing
– enables a firm to contract custom software development
or maintenance of existing legacy programs to outside firms,
which often operate offshore in low wage areas of the world.
Contemporary software Platform
Trends
Cloud based software services and tools
–Services for delivering and providing access to
remotely as a web based service(SaaS)
–Formal agreement with service providers(SLA)
Management Issues
• Dealing with platform and infrastructure change
( including cloud and mobile comouting)

• Managememt and governance

• Making wise infrastructure investments
