Thunderbolt :

 Thunderbolt is the brand name of a hardware interface for the connection of external peripherals to

a computer. It has been developed by Intel, in collaboration with Apple.
 It was initially marketed under the name Light Peak in 2019, Then renamed as thunderbolt by apple in
2011 on Macbook Pro
 Thunderbolt technology is a high-speed inter-system I/O interconnect with a generalized transport
infrastructure that provides the ability to simultaneously carry multiple I/O protocols over a common
cable
 Thunderbolt uses the same connector as USB Type-C, but with upgraded internal hardware in the
computer and external device.

Thunderbolt Versions :
 Thunderbolt 1.0 : 1st Generation TBT which supports two dual-simplex lanes each running at 10.3Gbps.

 Thunderbolt 2.0 : 2nd Generation TBT supports two dual-simplex lanes for a total bandwidth 20.6Gbps
with lane bonding.

Comparison :
 There is no difference in 1st Generation TBT and 2nd Generation TBT w.r.t to Ports,TBT cables and
connectors.
 1st Generation TBT and 2nd Generation TBT operate exclusively on mDP (Mini DisplayPort) connectors.

Thunderbolt 3.0

 3rd Generation TBT is defined as an Alternate Mode on the USB Type-C cable
and connector.
 Combines PCI Express ( Gen 3 x2 Lanes=8Gbps) and DisplayPort (Display Port
1.2 x4 Lanes=21Gbps) signals into a single digital channel.
 PCI Express is a generic protocol for transmitting data very quickly that
nearly all computers are designed to handle.
 DisplayPort is a protocol for transmitting high-resolution digital video.
 Both protocols utilize data packets, and Thunderbolt multiplexes both
protocols into one signal that is sent over the cable
