Measurement
Measurement
Santiago Jimenez: Measures can be very useful in our daily life in many ways, we use them when
We cook, when we do homework and in many other things.
Juliana López: Measures can help us have an idea of what we need to solve
common problems and in which quantities.
Mattia Fortich: Measures can contribute to humans by being more precise. For example a
building with bad measures can not be trustworthy.
Fabian duque: By measuring the experiments and the reults of this you can compare the measures to get better understanding of
how to solve it and what we are facing.
Rogelio Correa: Measures can help us being more accurate in our constructions or designs,
they also can help us in other areas like medicine, cooking or sports
Natalia Diaz: Mesures help us in the developing of building, houses and parks, since in construction
the use of measurements and weight is essential.
Mayre Coba: Measures can help control the levels of water or carbon dioxide in different regions. This is
important because we can observe if there are regions who are at risk.
Issa Khorfan: In order to solve problems in our environment, it is essential to apply measuring, since it will help provide
an efficient, organized and precise information that contributes to a well-sustained solution.
Maria Camila: Measures can help us in many different ways like cooking, design, building or fix something
Valeria Vásquez: Measures help us everyday, it is used for architecture, fashion, science and various of
other very essential matters to our society.

a) Este acueducto romano fue construido hace 2000 años y todavía está en pie. b) Colapso del Centro Cívico
Hartford en 1978, a sólo dos años después de ser construido.

What is the difference between accuracy and
precision?
•You can easily read the temperature
on this thermometer to the nearest
degree.
24.7 meters
0.743 meter
714 meters
2. Zeros appearing between nonzero digits are significant.
These are called “sandwich zeros”.
7003 meters
40.79 meters
1.503 meters
Rule 3: Trailing zeros follow a non zero digit and are significant only if
there is a decimal point.
Examples of this rule with the zeros this rule affects in boldface:
0.00500
0.03040
-5
2.30 x 10
12
4.500 x 10
100.000
Each of these measurements has four significant figures:
WHY? (find the captured & trailing zeros)
43.00 meters
1.010 meters
9.000 meters
Which digits are significant figures?
2. The second situation involves equivalents like those found within a system of
measurement. Each of these numbers has an unlimited number of significant
figures.
60 min = 1 hr
100 cm = 1 m
- Rule 2: “sandwich zeros” – any zeros between two significant digits are
significant.

0.0018 meter = 1.8 x 10 meter
Rounding Measurements
The arrow points to the digit immediately following the last
significant digit. Write your answer using scientific notation.
a. 314.721 meters – round to 4 significant figures
↑
2 is less than 5, so you do not round up.
2
314.7 meters = 3.147 x 10 meters
Apply the concepts to this problem.
The arrow points to the digit immediately following the second
significant digit. Write your answer using scientific notation.
c. 8792 meters - round to 2 significant figures
↑
9 is greater than 5, so round up.
2
= 2.6 meters
Significant Figures in Multiplication and Division
Give the answers to the correct number of significant figures.
a. 7.55 meters x 0.34 meter
b. 2.10 meters x 0.70 meter
2
= 1.5 meters
Solve Apply the concepts to this problem.

2.4526 meters ÷ 8.4 meters
= 0.29 meter
