TABLE TENNIS

OBJECTIVES
 trace the background/history of table tennis and familiarize the
nature of sport
 cite & describe the equipment used in table tennis
appreciate the importance of the sport and show an understanding
on how to play table tennis by accomplishing the given assessment
PRE-TEST
• Get a ¼ sheet of paper and number it from 1 to 5
• A 5 item TRUE or FALSE test will be given and each question
should be answered within the time limit given (5 seconds
each)
• Answer will be shown after the time limit and check your
OWN paper HONESTLY!

TABLE TENNIS
• Table tennis, also called Ping-Pong, is a ball
game similar to lawn tennis played on a flat
table divided into two equal courts by a net
fixed across its width at the middle.

OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME
• To hit the ball so that it goes over the net
and bounces on the opponent’s half of the
table in such a way that the opponent
cannot reach it to return
correctly.

organization called International Table Tennis
Federation (ITTF), founded in 1926.
• ITTF currently includes 226
Member associations. The

• The sport originated in Victorian England, where it was
played among the upper class as an after-dinner parlour
game.
• In 1921, Table Tennis Association was founded, and in 1926
renamed the English Table Tennis Association. The
International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) followed in 1926.
• London hosted the first official World
Championships in 1926.

• In 1993 the United States Table Tennis Association, now
called USA Table Tennis was formed.
• The first world championships were held in London in
1926, and from then until 1939 the game was by players
from Central Europe
• In the mid-1950s Asia emerged as a
breeding grounds for champions

• In 1980 the first World Cup was held, and Guo Yueha
of China won the $12,500 first prize.
• Table Tennis became an Olympic sport in 1988, with
singles and doubles competition for men and women.
