N-sides n-sided polygon
Example 1: The sum of the interior
angles of a polygon of n sides is . Find
the value of n.
Solution
Sum of interior angles of n-sided polygon
Theorem: The sum of the interior angles of
any n-sided convex polygon is .

Given: given a convex polygon with n sides.

It can be shown that the sum of the interior angles
“I” is 'I' .
• EXTERIOR ANGLES OF A CONVEX
POLYGON
• Theorem: The sum of the exterior angles
of a convex polygon is four right
angles(360).
OR
•exterior angle + interior angle = 180°
•So, for polygon with 'n' sides
•Let sum of all exterior angles be 'E' , and sum of all interior
angles be 'I' .
•E+I= n × 180°
•E =180°n - I
•Sum of interior angles is (n-2)×180°
•E = 180°n - (n -2) × 180°.
•E= 180°n - 180°n + 2 × 180°
•E= 180°n - 180°n + 360°
•E= 360°
•Hence, The sum of all the exterior angles of a polygon is 360° .
Summary of formulae in polygon:
Sum of interior angles .
Sum of exterior angles =
.
For a regular polygon:
Each exterior angle =
Example2: In the figure below, find the angles.
Example3: The sum of the interior angles of an
n-sided convex polygon is double the sum of the
exterior angles. Calculate the value of n.
Solution
Sum of interior angles = .
Sum of exterior angles = .
Example 4: A regular polygon has angles

Example 5: Onyebuchi is a painter. He is
using a canvas that is in the shape of a
regular hexagon. The perimeter of the
canvas is 78 cm. The perpendicular distance
from a side to the center is 11 cm to the
nearest cm. Based on these measurements,
what is the area of the canvas?
SOLUTION
• Note that a regular hexagon has 6 equal
sides and we can construct 6 equal
triangles as shown in the figure.
• Therefor, if the perimeter is 78cm, then
the length of a side
• The perpendicular distance from a side
to the center which is also the height of
one the triangles = 11 cm
• Area of hexagonal canvas
• (b=base, h=height)
• Area of hexagonal canvas

• Area of hexagonal canvas
