Bearing Capacity
Bearing Capacity
Bearing Capacity
Shape of the load settlement curve decides whether it is general shear failure or local shear
failure.
Density Index
The strip footing has a rough base, and the problem is essentially two
dimensional.
The elastic zone has straight boundaries inclined at ψ = to the horizontal, and
the plastic zones fully develop.
Failure zones do not extend above the horizontal plane through the base of the
footing i.e., the shear resistance of soil above the base is neglected and the effect
of soil around the footing is considered equivalent to a surcharge σ = D.
Limitations
As the soil compresses, changes; slight downward movement of
base (s) terms. Taking into account these factors, Terzaghi’s original
equation is expressed as
qnf = c Nc + (Nq-1) + B N
Nc = (Nq – 1) cot
Nq = tan2(45˚+ /2)eπtan
N = 2(Nq + 1) tan
Bearing Capacity Factors (IS: 6403-1981)
For obtaining Nc', Nq' and N' corresponding to local shear failure, calculate ' = tan-1(0.67
) and read Nc', Nq' and N ' from the table corresponding to values of '
Shape factor, depth factor and inclination factor
The above equation is modified to account the shape of footing, inclination of loading,
depth of embedment and effect of water table.
For general shear failure
qnf = c Nc.sc.dc.ic + σ(Nq-1)sq.dq.iq + B..N.s .d .i W'
For local shear failure
qnf = c Nc'.sc.dc.ic + σ(Nq'-1)sq.dq.iq + B..N'.s.d.iW'

Effect of water table : It is taken into account in the form of correction factor W'.
It is chosen as given below
i. If the water table is likely to permanently remain at or below a depth of (D+B)
beneath the ground level surrounding the footing, then W' = 1.
ii. If the water table is at a depth D or likely to rise to the base of footing or above,
then the value of W' shall be taken as 0.5.
iii. If the water table is likely to permanently get located at depth D < Dw < (D+B),
then W' = 0.5(1+ )
Cohesionless soils:
For cohesionless soils having c = 0, IS recommends that the bearing capacity to
be calculated based on relative density, standard penetration resistance value
and static cone penetration
1. Based on relative density
In this method, bearing capacity may be calculated using different method of
analysis using above equations taking c equal to zero based on the value of
relative density as shown in table below
Relative density
Sl No Voids Ratio Condition Method of analysis
(Density Index)
1 Greater than 70% Less than 0.5 Dense General shear
The ultimate net bearing capacity is then calculated from the formula
qnf = c Nc.sc.dc.ic
