Individualized Parenting Interventions for Parents of children with Autism

Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Focusing on Couples’ Relationship

Paragraph: 1
Psychological Counselling can empower people by helping them discover unique
techniques to overcome psychological challenges. Moreover, it can also assist
people in improving sense of wellbeing and develop more efficient and productive
ways of living.
The quality of the couple's relationship directly influences parenting styles
adapted. Hence, couples’ relationship management becomes crucial for efficient
and effective parenting.
Parents having children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) feel the burn in
multiple levels – relationship with their spouses, parenting challenges, challenges
in prioritizing, sense of wellbeing etc. There is a dearth of interventions which can
individualize parenting based on relationship dynamics of the couple and the
characteristics of their children with ASD.
In India, there is a lack for awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and
interventions of ASD. Lack of resources, guideline and assistance makes parenting
increasingly difficult even for educated parents with affluent economic 1
Paragraph: 2
Irrespective of severity level, ASD comes with several challenges. Symptom of
ASD varies from child to child which leaves the parents perplexed. In the
meanwhile, parenting could be overwhelmingly difficult, as parents not only
have to understand the problems of the child but also have to deal with the
individual differences with spouses, and other work-life challenges while
parenting. Eventually, challenges pertaining to parents’ psychological well
being, relationship of the couples, and effective parenting increase. This
paper is an attempt to review the impact of individualised parenting
interventions based on psychosocial education, couples’ therapy, self-
awareness, and self-care for parents. The literature discusses the assessment
of children, assessment of issues in couples’ relationship, psychosocial
education, couple therapy and self-care.

after parent-child intervention. This study was done in Dehli, India
where there was significant disparity in economic status of parents.
• The study by Brezis, R.S., showed that parents with relatively less
income were more concerned with their children’s immediate needs
and parents from affluent background were more focused on their
roles and responsibilities. However, after they went through the
intervention, there was difference in their narrative as parents. Their
narrative was focus more on the child’s development than the

provided services. The literature reveals that the intervention was
based strongly on the guidelines given by the professionals and the
parents had no scope for developing sense of autonomy in caring for

emotional distress, family relationship, impact of lifestyle on parenting
children with ASD. According to the study, knowing the perception of

tremendous challenges to lack of participation by the fathers or

dealing with school absences. The study also proposes health care
