HEAT

TRANSFER
HEAT TRANSFER

• is the process by which internal energy from

one substance transfers to another substance.

THERMODYNAMICS – is the study of heat

transfer and the changes
that results from it.
How is heat transferred?
METHODS OF HEAT TRANSFER

CONDUCTION CONVECTION RADIATION

CONDUCTION

Is the transfer of heat between

substances that are in direct contact
with each other. The better conductor,
the more rapidly heat will be
transferred.
Conduction occurs when a substance is
heated, particles will gain more energy,
and virbate more. These molecules then
bump into nearby particles and transfer
some of their energy to them.
CONVECTION

Is when a heated particles transfer heat

to another substance, such as cooking
something in boiling water.
Occurs when warm areas of a liquid or
gas rise to cooler areas. Cooler liquid or
gas then takes the place of the warmer
areas which have risen higher resulting
to a continuos circulation pattern.
RADIATION

• Is a method of heat transfer

that does not rely upon any
contact between the heat
source and the heated object.
Heat can be transferred through
empty spaces by thermal
radiation or infrared radiation.

• Radiation is when heat is

transferred through
electromagnetic waves, such as
from the sun.
When does heat transfer stops?

• Heat transfer stops when it reaches thermal

equilibrium ( when the source of heat and
the receiver of heat is at the same
temperature).
Effects of Heat Transfer

• The basic effect of heat transfer is that the particles of one

substance collide with the particles of another substance.
• The most blatant effect of this in our day – t- day life is a phase
transition, where a substance changes from one state of matter to
another.
SHORT QUIZ
•Answer the following questions. Write your answer on a ¼ piece
of paper.
1. Which type of thermal energy transfer requires moving liquids
and gases?
2. How is thermal energy transferred through empty space?
3. How is thermal energy transferred when particles are
touching?
4. Which type of thermal energy transfer is prevented when a
baker uses a potholder to remove hot cookie sheets from an
oven?
5. What property must be different between two pieces of
matter for thermal energy to be transferred between them?
a. density b. mass c. temperature d. volume
