Asexual propagation
TWO GENERAL TYPES OF PLANT
PROPAGATION

• Sexual propagation is the reproduction of plants by seeds and

spores.
SEXUAL PROPAGATION BY SEEDS

Plants that produce seeds are called SPERMATOPHYTES

PROPAGATING FERNS BY SPORES

Sexual propagation also includes growth from spores. Spores

are tiny dust-like seeds that grow on SPOROPHYTES, plants
that produce spores as means of reproduction.

• If seeds are obtained well ahead of the actual sowing date (or
are surplus seeds), store them in a cool, dry place.
• Gardeners can save money and cultivate a rewarding hobby
by saving seeds from plants in their own gardens.

TWO GENERAL TYPES OF PLANT
PROPAGATION

2. Asexual propagation is sometimes referred to as vegetative

propagation, involves taking vegetative parts of a plant (stems,
roots, and/or leaves) and causing them to regenerate into a new
plant or, in some cases, several plants.
MAJOR METHODS OF ASEXUAL
PROPAGATION

CUTTINGS: involve rooting a severed piece of the parent plant.

Cuttings can be made from stems, roots, leaves, or combinations of
plant parts
STEM CUTTINGS:
-Stem cuttings consist of just the growing tip of a plant or stem
sections below the tip (Tip, Medial and Cane)
LEAF CUTTINGS:

will grow as one plant.
GENERAL GUIDELINES IN CUTTING

• Take cuttings with a sharp blade to reduce injury to the parent

plant.
• Dip the cutting tool in rubbing alcohol or a mixture of one part
bleach : nine parts water to prevent transmitting diseases from
infected plant parts to healthy ones.
GENERAL GUIDELINES IN CUTTING
• Remove flowers and flower buds from cuttings to allow the
cutting to use its energy and stored carbohydrates for root and
shoot formation rather than fruit and seed production.
• To hasten rooting, increase the number of roots, or to obtain
uniform rooting (except on soft, fleshy stems), use a rooting
hormone, preferably one containing a fungicide.
GENERAL GUIDELINES IN CUTTING

• Prevent possible contamination of the entire supply of rooting

hormone by putting some in a separate container for dipping
cuttings.
• In general, the rooting medium should be sterile, low in
fertility, drain well enough to provide oxygen, and retain
enough moisture to prevent water stress.
GENERAL GUIDELINES IN CUTTING

• Place stem and leaf cuttings in bright, indirect light. Root

cuttings can be kept in the dark until new shoots appear.

a. Look around for a plant that can be propagated.

b. Type in the chat box the name of the plant and what

method of propagation can be used.
