Drafting Tools

Drafting Tool or Technical

Drawing Tool
O Technical drawing tools include and are not
limited to: pens, rulers, compasses, protractors
and drawing utilities. Drafting tools may be used
for measurement and layout of drawings, or to
improve the consistency and speed of creation of
standard drawing elements. The tools used for
manual technical drawing have been displaced
by the advent of the personal computer and its
common utilization as the main tool in computer-
aided drawing, draughting and design (CADD).
Drafting Tools includes:
O Drafting Paper O Drafting Brush
O Drafting Pencils O Drafting Table /
O T-Square Drafting Board
O Architectural Scale
O Drafting Compass
O Protractor
O French Curve
O Triangles
Drafting Paper
O Drafting paper comes in a variety of materials
and surface finished.
O Drawings may be prepared on paper, vellum, or
plastic film (commonly called by its trade name
Mylar).
O Drafting paper, vellum, and film can be
purchased in sheets or rolls.
O Vellums and drafting films (Mylar) are see
through material.

Drafting Pencils and Pens
O Traditional and typical styli used for technical drawing are pencils
 and technical pens.
O Pencils in use are usually mechanical pencils with a standard lead
thickness. The usual line widths are 0.18 mm, 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm
and 0.7 mm. Hardness varies usually from HB to 2H. Softer lead
gives a better contrast, but harder lead gives a more accurate line.
Bad contrast of the lead line in general is problematic when
photocopying, but new scanning copy techniques have improved
the final result. Paper or plastic surfaces require their own lead
types.
O The pen is generally a Rapidograph-type technical pen, a marker
pen that draws lines of consistent width (so-called steel marker
pen).

T-Square
O A T-Square is a technical drawing instrument used by
draftsperson.
O It is first used to align the drafting paper on the drafting
board or table.
O It is often used as a guide for drawing horizontal lines.
O It may also guide a triangle to draw vertical or diagonal lines.
O Its name comes from the general shape of the instrument
where the
O horizontal member of the T slides on the side of the drafting
table.

Architectural Scale
O An architect's scale is a specialized ruler designed to
facilitate the drafting and measuring of architectural
drawings, such as floor plans and orthographic
projections.
O Because the scale of such drawings are often smaller
than life-size, an architect's scale features multiple
units of length and proportional length increments.
O An engineer’s scale is similar to an architect’s scale
but it is used to draw much larger objects like
multiple city blocks.

Drafting Compass
O A compass or pair of compasses is a
technical drawing instrument that can be used for
inscribing circles or arcs.
O As dividers, they can also be used as a tool to
measure distances, in particular on maps.
O Compasses can be used for mathematics,
drafting, navigation, and other purposes.

Protractor
O In geometry, a protractor is a circular or
semicircular tool for measuring an angle or a circle.
O The units of measurement utilized are usually
degrees.
O Some protractors are simple half-discs; these have
existed since ancient times.
O More advanced protractors, such as the bevel
protractor, have one or two swinging arms, which
can be used to help measure the angle.

French Curve
O A French curve is a template made out of metal,
wood or plastic composed of many different
curves.
O It is used in drafting to draw smooth curves of
varying radii.
O The curve is placed on the drawing material and
a pencil, knife, or other implement is traced
around its curves to produce the desired result.

Triangles
O A drafting triangle is a precision drafting tool for
drawing lines at specific angles.
O In the field of architecture, angles are measured
in degrees.
O Common Type of Triangles:
 30° 60° 90° Triangles
 45° 45° 90° Triangles
 Adjustable Triangles

Drafting Brush
O Used for cleaning debris off a drafting table or
drafting board
Drafting Table / Drafting Board
O A drawing board (also drawing table, drafting
table or architect's table) is, in its antique form, a kind
of multipurpose desk which can be used for any kind of
drawing, writing or impromptu sketching on a large
sheet of paper or for reading a large format book or other
oversized document or for drafting precise technical
illustrations (such as engineering drawings or
architectural drawings). The drawing table used to be a
frequent companion to a pedestal desk in a gentleman's
study or private library, during the pre-industrial and
early industrial era.
