INTRODUCTION
• Geotextiles are one of the largest groups in geo
synthetics they are indeed textiles in natural sense but
consists of synthetic fibers rather than natural ones.

• The synthetic fibers are made in to flexible , porous

fabrics by standard weaving machinery.
What is Geo Textile?
• Geo Textiles are permissible fabrics used with
foundation, soil, rock, earth, or any other
geotechnical engineering-related materials.

• Typically they are made from polypropylene or

polyest.
Types of Geo Textiles
Woven Geo Textiles:
Woven geotextiles are textile
materials consisting of regular planar
structures formed by weaving.
From the interweaving of a number of
threads which allow to obtain a fabric
with excellent mechanical properties and
regular openings, even the smallest ones.
Non-Woven
Nonwoven geotextiles are permeable
geosynthetics used in soil, rock, & other
geotechnical-related material as an integral part
of a civil engineering projects and structures.

Nonwoven geotextiles are generally used

to provide separation, combined with
filtration and drainage functions when used in a
civil application
Knitted Geo Textiles
•Knitted geotextiles are a
subset to woven
geotextiles  formed by
interlocking a series of
loops of one or more
yarns to form a planar
structure.
Natural Geo Textiles
Jute Geo Textiles:
Jute Geotextile (JGT) is one of the
most important diversified jute
product.
It can be applied in many fields like
civil engineering, soil erosion control,
road pavement construction and
protection of river banks.
It is widely used in road construction.
Coir Geo Textiles
Coir geotextiles are made from coconut
fibre extracted from the husk of
coconut.
Like other polymeric counterparts, coir
geotextiles are developed for specific
applications in civil engineering like
erosion control, ground improvement,
filtration, drainage, river bank protection,
road pavements, slope stability etc.
Engineering Applications
Separation
Filtration
Drainage
Reinforcement
Advantages
Strength-for-strength, they are lighter than woven geotextiles using the same
yarn. This makes for easier handling and laying on site, thus transport and
labor costs are also less.

Knitted geotextiles have exceptional tear strength. Additional strength can be

designed and built-in to the weft direction such that a bi-axial high tensile,
high strength warp/weft geotextile becomes a reality; e.g. 500kNm warp and
500k Nm weft.

Knitted geotextiles can incorporate an additional fabric to form a true

composite geotextile.
Dis-Advantages
Properly installed matting provide excellent erosion control but
do so at relatively high cost.
Geotextiles and Mats may delay seed germination, due to
reduction in soil temperature . Plastic sheeting is easily
vandalized, easily torn, photodegradable, and must be disposed
of at a landfill.
Plastic results in 100% runoff, which may cause serious
erosion problems in the areas receiving the increased flow.
Conclusion
The Geotextiles are more efficient ,effective and
economical method of solving geotechnical problems on
roads, drainages,reinforcements,seperations,filtrations
etc….
The design engineer should be well aware of problems
&outcomes,should also understand the
properties,capabilities of geotextiles.
