CHAPTER 8

INTERNAL
STRUCTURE
OF LEAF
XYLEM
FEATURES OF XYLEM
• It is like a long drainpipe, made up of many hollow, dead
cells joined end to end.
• Xylem vessels run from the roots of a plant, right up through
the stem. They branch out to every leaf.
• Do not contain cytoplasm or nuclei.
• Their walls are made of cellulose and lignin.(Lignin is a hard,
strong and a waterproof substance).
• As lignin is strong, xylem vessels help to keep plants upright.
• Wood is made of entirely of lignified xylem vessels.
The parts colored
orange are made
of Lignin.
Functions of Xylem
Xylem is the specialized tissue of
that transports water and minerals
from the plant–soil interface to
stems and leaves and provides
mechanical support and storage.
