Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of
Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located in the
heart of Asia. It is located geographically in South
Asia, within a regional block between the Indian
sub-continent, Central Asia and the Middle East.

Location
• Is located in Central Asia with Iran
to the west and Pakistan to the
east. Tall, forbidding mountains and
dry deserts cover most of the
landscape of Afghanistan.

The modern Afghan nation had
its origin in the 18th century
when Ahmad Sha Durrani
managed to unify all the tribes
in 1747 and fought the
Persians and Indians,
establishing a monarchy that
reigned until 1973. In 1973 a
military coup led by
Muhammad Daoud Khan
overthrew the monarchy and
established the Republic.
