APPLYING POSITIVE

PSYCHOLOGY AND
INTEGRATION
LET’S TRY AGAIN: CASE OF NANCY

Nancy is a 38-year old woman who lives along with her cat,
following separation from her long-term partner two years ago.
She frequently feels tired and has difficulty sleeping. She also
noted some instances of weight loss.

Nancy started to reorganize her routine by way of trying her

best to take a long walk at their backyard. She enjoys going to
the grocery and organizing these purchases in her kitchen
cabinets.

She still often feels the emptiness and had this urge of going
back to her bed.
CHARACTER AND STRENGTHS

Why do character and

strengths are studied in
psychology?
Aren’t they too philosophical?
CHRISTOPHER PETERSON AND MARTIN
SELIGMAN

Following an extensive review of

thousands of pieces of literature,
science, and text, from across the
world and across the centuries, they
identified 24 character strengths
that are organized into six virtues.
VIA: CHARACTER STRENGTHS AND VIRTUES
(PETERSON & SELIGMAN, 2004)

present in a range of the individual’s behaviours,

thoughts , feelings, and actions, generalizable
across situations and times.

morally and universally valued across

cultures
knowing your constellation of character
strengths (dynamics of personality) help people
live happier lives.
VIA: CHARACTER STRENGTHS AND VIRTUES
(PETERSON & SELIGMAN, 2004)

displaying the strength does not

diminish others, but may rather benefit
them.
It can be measured.
VIA: CHARACTER STRENGTHS AND
VIRTUES
• Each person has each of 24 character strengths
but in varying degrees.

• It is comprised of 24 Character
Strengths which fall under 6 broad
virtue categories.
• Your character strengths are the personality
characteristics that help you achieve a life in
well-being.

Clinical Psychology has “DSM 5”

while Positive Psychology has
Values in Action (VIA)
Classification of Strengths and
Virtues
POSITIVE THERAPY
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

Positive Therapy focuses on patient’s

existing strengths and resources rather
than view the client as flawed and
disordered.
It is concerned with enhancing strengths
and qualities within the individual but
also with the prevention of mental
illness and ill-being
RATIONAL EMOTIONAL BEHAVIOURAL
THERAPY (REBT)

Albert Ellis
Based on rationality*

Rationality--characterized by positive
emotions (pleasure, joy, excitement), an
absence of dysfunctional negative emotions, a
determination to solve life’s problems and
goal directed behaviour.
RATIONAL EMOTIONAL BEHAVIOURAL
THERAPY (REBT)
Examples:
■ Self-interest – individuals need to pursue their
own interests before others; not to give over
themselves to others (be kind to yourself).
■ Social interest – while you are pursing your
happiness makes sure it is not at the expense of
others and be kind to others.
■ Self-direction- do not wait for others to ‘serve’
you happiness or remove dissatisfaction; you
need to do this yourself.
ORGANISMIC VALUING PROCESS

Carl Rogers
provide unconditional positive regard to
strip away external and internal
conditions of worth.
Do you still remember that “Yes, I
understand” or “I’m listening” ?
WELLBEING THERAPY

This type of therapy is conceptually

based on Ryff’s Psychological Wellbeing
(PWB) model, targeting environmental
mastery, personal growth, purpose in
life, autonomy, self-acceptance and
positive relations with others.
