We use past simple to talk about things that happened in
the past.

Subject + verb past form + complement


I played the guitar last night
Subject + auxiliar verb (did) + not + base form verb + complement
I did not (didn’t) play the guitar last
night
Auxiliar verb (Did) + subject + base form verb + complement + ?
Did I play the guitar last night?
REGULAR VERB RULES

1.- We add –ed at the end of the verb


Example: Jump - Jumped
2.- If the verb ends with an –e, we only add a –d
Example: Vote – Voted
3.- If the verb ends with a consonant-vowel-
consonant we double the last consonant and add
–ed.
Example: Stop - Stopped
REGULAR VERB RULES

We only double the last consonant if the stressed is in
the last syllable
Examples: Listen – Listened
Prefer - Preferred

We don’t double the consonants: w, x or y
Example: Mix – Mixed

4.- If the verb ends with consonant + -y we drop


the –y and add –ied
Example: Cry – Cried
IRREGULAR VERBS

There are no rules.
