Introduction

 Listening skill is one of the most essential skills needed by all of us . Unfortunately, we
all love only to talk and listening. But, developing this vital skill can help us in our
society, profession or even in our domestic field.
Definition

 The process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and
nonverbal messages , to hear something with thoughtful attention.
Types

 Deep listening
Deep listening occurs when you are committed to understanding the speaker’s perspective. This type of listening helps build trust and
rapport, and it helps others feel comfortable in expressing their thoughts and opinions .

 Full listening
full listening involves paying close and careful attention to what the speaker is conveying . It is useful in the classroom, when some one is
instructing you on how to complete a task, and when discussing work projects with superiors .

 Critical listening
it involves using systematic reasoning and careful thoughts to analayze a speaker’s message and separate fact from
opinion.

 Therapeutic listening
It means allowing a friend, colleague or family member to discuse their problems .
Difference between

Hearing  Listening
 Hearing is simply the act of perceiving sound by the ear.
 Listening is an action where you choose to actively
 Hearing occurs with or without your consent. concentrate on what you hear.
 In listening your brain processes the information into
knowledge.

 Effective listening is a learned skill that takes a lot of time, practice and patience.
 If we use effective listening strategies , pay attention to gender and cultural and
differences and utilize critical thinking skills, we can improve our effectiveness as a
listener.
