5
Definition

A random variable is a variable that assumes numerical values associated with the random
outcome of an experiment, where one (and only one) numerical value is assigned to each
sample point.

Probability Distributions for Discrete Random Variables

 The probability distribution of a discrete random variable is a graph, table or

formula that specifies the probability associated with each possible outcome the
random variable can assume.
 p(x) ≥ 0 for all values of x
 p(x) = 1

9
The Binomial Distribution

 A Binomial Random Variable

n identical trials
 Two outcomes: Success or Failure
 P(S) = p; P(F) = q = 1 – p
 Trials are independent
x is the number of Successes in n trials

Practice Questions

1. It is known that 60% of mice inoculated with a serum are protected from a
certain disease. If 5 mice are inoculated, find the probability that:
 (a) none contracts the disease;
 (b) fewer than 2 contract the disease;
 (c) more than 3 contract the disease.

Practice Questions

Q: The probability that a patient recovers from a delicate heart operation is 0.9 .What is the
probability that exactly five of the next 7 patients having this operation survive?
Q:If 60% of the voters in a large district prefer candidate A, What is probability that in a
sample of 12 voters exactly 7 will prefer A.
