Centrifugal Pumps - Overview
• The liquid enters the inlet of the centrifugal pump under atmospheric
pressure, and flows into the eye of the impeller.
• The Centrifugal force exerted on the liquid by the
rotating impeller, moves the liquid away from
the impeller eye and out along the impeller
vanes to their extreme tip where the liquid is
then forced against the inside walls of the volute
and out through the discharge of the pump.
• Due to the reduction of pressure occurring
at pump inlet and impeller eye, liquid is drawn
into the pump in continuous flow as it moves
through the pump.

• Open Impeller and Semi-Open Impeller are used for pumping slurries,
pulping paper, chemical substances etc.
– Designed for easy and smooth movement of the liquid/slurries being
pumped.
• Enclosed Impeller are used mostly in HVAC market to pump clean
water where no slurries or suspended solids are involved.
• Semi-Open Impeller and Enclosed impeller can have the same
efficiency in the beginning, but in the long run as the pump wears and
tears, the clearance between the vane of the impeller and the volute
needs to be adjusted in Semi-Open impeller, while on the Enclosed
impeller, it can be adjusted by just replacing the wear rings.

Specific Speed
• Specific Speed is used to describe the geometry (shape) of a pump
impeller.
– Performance of Centrifugal pump is expressed in terms of pump speed,
total head and, required flow. Specific Speed is calculated using the
formula below at pump’s BEP.
– Formula: Specific Speed (Ns)= N √Q
N: speed of pump (rpm), H (3/4)
Q: flow, H: head

• The total, global sales of pumps, parts and drivers in 2005 is estimated
at US$45 Billion.
• 75% of total pump revenue is in the centrifugal classification.
• 30% of the centrifugal revenue is in the single stage pump.
• Estimated US$5 Billion in revenue for single stage pumps in 2005.
• United States based companies sell approximately 18% of the total
annual pump revenue.
