THE CÓNDOR ANDINO

 The cóndor andino it is a species of bird in the cathartidae family that lives in
south america.
 this animal helps the environment with the decomposition of dead animals since it is
considered a scavenger


ANIMAL ABILITY
It can live more than 50 years in the wild and up to 80
in captivity. It measures around 142 cm in height and
reaches a wingspan of 330 cm. Its distribution range
narrows through the Andes from the north in Colombia
to the extreme south of Chilean and Argentine
Patagonia, passing through Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia.
Since ancient times it has been an important animal in
the mythology and traditions of the Andean world, for
example for the Incas, who considered it immortal and
the representation of Jananpacha, the land above, the
sky and the future.

• BLACK COLOR AND HAVE A WHITE COLLAR


• A STRONG, SHARP BEAK
• THEIR WINGS ARE HIGHLY DEVELOPED
• THE MALE ANDEAN CONDOR CAN MEASURE UP TO 142 CENTIMETERS IN HEIGHT AND UP TO 330 IN
WINGSPAN AND WEIGH BETWEEN 12 TO 15 KILOS. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE FEMALES ARE SMALLER
AND WEIGH FROM 7 TO 11 KILOS. THEY HAVE A VERY LONG LIFE, REACHING 75 YEARS OF AGE.
• THE CONDOR IS AN ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY SCAVENGER ANIMAL, IT FEEDS ON ALL KINDS OF LARGE
DEAD ANIMALS, SUCH AS: LLAMAS, ALPACAS, DEER, COWS, ETC. FOR THIS REASON, THEIR HEAD AND
NECK ARE DEVOID OF FEATHERS, TO PREVENT BACTERIA AND FUNGI FROM DECOMPOSING MEAT FROM
CAUSING DISEASES.
REPRODUCCION

• CONDORS RARELY SPEND THE NIGHT INSIDE THE NEST, UNLESS THEY ARE
INCUBATING AN EGG OR RAISING A CHICK; HOWEVER, FEMALES MAY SPEND ONE
OR TWO NIGHTS IN THE NEST BEFORE LAYING. EGGS ARE FREQUENTLY LAID AT
NIGHT OR EARLY IN THE MORNING.
