CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH DESIGN
AND METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents a brief description of
the general method of research applied in
the study, the respondents, the procedural
steps followed in the study, which includes
the research instruments, and the statistical
treatment applied for the analysis and
interpretation of data.
Research Design
The researchers of this study used a descriptive quantitative method and non-probability sampling,
specifically, purposive sampling. This sampling enables the researchers to collect data and
information regarding the impact of the Covid-19 on mental health as perceived by the Bachelor of
Science in Information Technology Students of UCC South Campus.
A descriptive qualitative method is a collection of data from various sources to acquire deeper
understanding to the participants, including their opinions, perspective, and attitude.
The researchers aimed to help the students at the University of Caloocan City to gain knowledge with
regards to the impact of the Covid-19 on mental health as perceived by the Bachelor of Science in
Information Technology Students. This study will also assist the future researchers in the completion
of their studies as it will serve as their guide, reference, and prerequisite to finish the course. This
study was performed using the survey questionnaire through Google forms which contains relevant
questions regarding the impact of the Covid-19 on mental health as perceived by the Bachelor of
Science in Information Technology Students of University of Caloocan City South Campus.
Respondents of the Study

The study will be conducted at University of Caloocan City Campuses since the chosen
respondents are the Bachelor of science in Information technology students of the University
who might experience the effect of Covid-19 Pandemic in terms of mental health.

A total of 100 students at University of Caloocan City were the respondents of the study. They
are described based on their demographic profile, which includes their age, gender (Male or
Female), year, and student status (Regular or Irregular). The sample population of this study
includes (100) enrolled students in University of Caloocan City in the year 2021-2022.
Sampling Technique of the Study

The researchers utilized the random sampling in the process of

choosing the respondents, the researchers selected (100) students
with different year level and student’s status will be the
respondents and may answer the survey that will be conducted
because they are the one who may experience problems and
difficulties that may affect their mental health due to the Covid-19
pandemic.
Research Instruments
This research will be conducted using a survey questionnaire as the main data gathering
instrument for this study. The questionnaire will be divided into three main parts: Part 1
pertains to the profile of the student-respondents, specifically their age, gender, year
and status as a student, while part 2 will be how does the Covid-19 Pandemic affect
students' mental health. The part 3 will be what are the programs that the academic
institution may conduct to help students deal with mental health issues. Lastly, part 4
will be How do the students overcome their mental health issue. The questions were
structured using the Likert Scale format. In this survey, five choices were provided for
every statement that was given by the researchers. The choices represent and describe
the degree of the impact of the Covid-19 on Mental Health as perceived by the Bachelor
of Science in Information Technology students of University of Caloocan City - South
Campus.
Validation of Research Instrument

The instrument was presented to the qualified mentors who were

Master Teachers for critiquing and content validation. All
suggestions and recommendations were welcomed for the
purpose of revision and finalization. They were incorporated into
the final draft of the questionnaire.
Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers make a letter signed by the research adviser and

sent to the head of department of University of Caloocan City to
have permission to conduct the survey. The researchers create a
survey questionnaire in Google form and send it to the
respondents. All the answers made by the respective respondents
were highly important to this study. The data gathered from the
respondent answers are analyzed by the researchers. The
researchers will interpret all of the information and put it to the
study.
Statistical Treatment of Data

This study utilized the following statistical tools to treat the

collected data for analysis and interpretation that may lead to the
finding out the impact of the Covid-19 on Mental Health as
perceived by the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology
students of University of Caloocan City - South Campus.
Statistical Treatment of Data
1. Frequency and Percentage: This tool will determine the frequency of
occurrence of the variables that describes the profile of the respondents, as
well as with its percentage, for better understanding on how the profile is
involved in the study.
The formula is:
P=F/N*100
Where:
P= Percentage
F= Frequency
N= Total number of respondents
Statistical Treatment of Data
2. Weighted Mean: This will be used to determine the weights of each indicator that
may describe how the Covid-19 pandemic affects the Mental Health of the Bachelor of
Science in Information Technology students; also, the tool will be used to determine the
strength of the proposed solutions that may solve problems encountered by the students
during pandemic.
The formula is:
u=N*I
Where:
u= Mean
N= Total number of respondents
I= Indicators
Statistical Treatment of Data

3. Likert Scale/Legend Use: This will be used to determine the

scale of each indicator.
3.26 - 4.0 = Strongly Agree
2.51 – 3.25 = Agree
1.76 – 2.50 = Disagree
1.0 - 1.75 = Strongly Disagree
