Abstract
One of the most difficult decision to be made by graduating Senior High School
students is the course they will take up in college. This is vital in their preparation for
their future careers or ventures. They have to be prepared and guided by the people
around them in making these important choices so the factors affecting their college
course preferences should be understood. This study seeks to determine the level of
influence of the factors that influence the choice of college course of Grade 12 HUMSS
students of Meycauayan National High School. A questionnaire was developed as an
instrument to assess the level of influence of the identified factors including the
learners’ dreams, skills, and abilities, family/parents/guardians’ influence, peer
influence, considerations about the institution, and future job opportunities. The
findings revealed that the student-respondents gave more importance on their dreams,
skills and interests. Although they still acknowledge the

guidance and support of their families and peers, it is not that much influential to
their college course preferences. More bearing is given in the influence of the future
career opportunities most especially in considering the salary range of the jobs
related to their course as well as in the cost of education in the institution they prefer
to enroll in. It is therefore recommended that the learners be armed for the future with
the needed 21st century skills and information about the various college courses and
institutions offering them so that they will be well-guided with their choices. Parents,
teachers, guidance/career counselors and school heads should work hand in hand in
guiding them in their college course choices by giving them the vital information they
need and not impose on them the best choice for them.
Introduction: Rationale
Achieving higher education is extremely valuable as any person seeks for a better future.
With more and more occupations requiring advanced education, a college degree can be
critical to your success in today’s workforce (Gagnon, 2022). The crucial importance of
choosing one’s college course person’s life and future cannot be overstated. In choosing a
course and college or university, a lot of factors come to interplay and these makes the
choice more complicated for students. Some of these factors include the person’s own skills
and interests, family background, peer influence, availability of the chosen course in a
preferred institution, and future job opportunities.
Kuehnle (2017) stated in his article, The Difficulties of Choosing a College Course, that
with so many courses and majors to decide on, it becomes difficult for students to make a
decision on the right college course that best fit them. While there is no way to predict what
will happen, this choice that they will make will surely impact their lives in the future.
Introduction: Rationale
The problem is that such a critical decision on what college course to take is affected by
so many factors which not only students should become aware of but also by their parents,
current schools, and guidance and career counselors so that they will be duly guided better.
Though there are many researches already conducted on this topic, there is a need for it to
be conducted in a more local context to better see and understand the students’ situation in a
given school, division, or region in our country so that they will be better assisted in this life-
changing phase in their lives.
This study aims to identify the factors that affect the the choice of college course among
Grade 12 Students of Meycauayan National High School. The results may be the basis for
the stakeholders to better guide the students in the choices that they will make so that they
will be productive citizens in the future.
