Assessing Your Weight and

Health Risk

Dr Imran
Three things are important to know
• Body mass index (BMI)

• Waist circumference

• Risk factors for diseases and conditions associated with obesity

What is BMI?
• Body Mass Index, Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat
based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.
(NIH)
Waist Circumference
• Measuring waist circumference helps screen for possible health risks
that come with overweight and obesity.
• If most of your fat is around your waist rather than at your hips,
you’re at a higher risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
• This risk goes up with a waist size that is greater than 35 inches for
women or greater than 40 inches for men.
• To correctly measure your waist, stand and place a tape measure
around your middle, just above your hipbones. Measure your waist
just after you breathe out.
Risk Factors for Health Topics Associated With
Obesity
• Along with being overweight or obese, the following conditions will put you at
greater risk for heart disease and other conditions:
Practical

• Calculate BMI……share with the class data, represent the data in graph or pie
chart diagram showing what %age of class is……………under, normal, OW, Obese?

• Calculate the waste circumference…..and try make a risk assessment…how far

you/loved ones are from being at risk of heart disease/diabetes?

• If known then can also consider risk factors. This can be obtained by lab test….if
want can order an test samples can be collected from home by several labs…..
How to calculated BMI
• BMI= Weight/(Height)2 74/(1.778)2=74/3.161=23.4

• Weight is in Kg.

• Height is in Meters.

• If you have other units convert them to KG and Meters

How can you use BMI?

• BMI= Weight/(Height)2

Weight= BMI*(Height)2

Blood group Determination
• You will use this game and to learn how to determine blood group in reality.
• For copy draw the drawing of your test and develop the table and find your
blood group and state the reason as well.
• Write title, materials required, Procedure in your own words and
conclusion/finding of the test
• You will answer who can donate blood to you, and who you can in the class.
• Note your blood group and share in the class data sheet.
