HIV/AIDS IN JAMAICA

HIV-Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Jamaica has an estimated HIV prevalence of 1.6% among the general
population. It is estimated that 29,000 persons are currently living
with HIV in Jamaica; but approximately 16% are unaware of their
status.
The HIV prevalence among young adolescent girls and boys aged 10-
14 is equal and is estimated to be 0.1% 1 predominantly the result of
mother-to-child transmission of HIV. In (15 – 19 years), there is an
increase in HIV prevalence, and by the age of 24, there is a further
increased because the sexual activities is becoming more frequent.
AIDS- Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome
The rate of AIDS has declined from 25 deaths/100,000 population in
2004 to just over 9 deaths/100,000 population in 2015 which
represents a 64% decrease in 2004.
Approximately 75% of all AIDS cases reported 1982 - 2015 are in the
20 - 49 year old age group.
