Lecture #2 -

SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT LIFE

CYCLE (SDLC)

Business System Analysis and Design

System Development Life Cycle
• The SDLC is a phased approach to
analysis and design of information
systems.
– The principle behind it is that systems are
best developed through the use of a
specific cycle of analyst and user activities.
– The user should sign off at each stage
before moving on to the next section.

Business System Analysis and Design

The stages of a system are:-

1. Analysis - Define problems,

requirements, existing system
2. Design - Create the system
3. Implementation - Installation of new
system and bringing it to a working
state.
4. Operation and Modification - Run and
regular maintenance of system

Seven Phase SDLC
1. Identify problems, opportunities and
objectives/Preliminary Investigation
(Survey)

2. Determine information requirements

/Detailed Investigation (Study)

Seven Phase SDLC
3. Analyse system needs

4. Design the recommended system

Seven Phase SDLC
5. Develop and document software

6. Test and Maintain system

7. Implement and evaluate system

Preliminary Investigation
1. Fact finding techniques
1. Procedure Manuals
2. Interviews
3. Questionnaire
4. Form Analysis
5. Observations

2. Feasibility Study

Feasibility Study
1. Economic Feasibility
2. Technical Feasibility
3. Operational Feasibility
4. Schedule Feasibility

Business System Analysis and Design

Feasibility Study
Feasibility study is a study done to see if
the proposed system is worthwhile
doing. Areas of feasibility are:

1. Economic Feasibility
2. Technical Feasibility
3. Operational Feasibility
4. Schedule Feasibility

Business System Analysis and Design

Feasibility Study – Economic
Feasibility
• Economic Feasibility looks at the costs
and benefits associated with the
proposed system. The long run
benefits should outweigh the short
term costs
• It looks at two broad areas:
1. Costs
2. Benefits

Business System Analysis and Design

Economic Feasibility
• Costs • Benefits
1. Hardware Costs 1. Tangible – those
2. Software Costs benefits that can be
3. Human Resource equated into
Costs (Systems monetary terms.
Analyst & Team, E.g.
trainers, users) 2. Intangible benefits
– those benefits
that cannot be
equated into
monetary terms.
E.g.

Technical Feasibility
• This area of feasibility looks at the
technology and technical expertise
needed to develop the proposed
system.

Operational Feasibility
• This area of feasibility looks to see if the
proposed system will be used if put in
operation.
• Different fact finding techniques can be
employed to find out how proposed
users of the system feel about the idea
of proposed system

Business System Analysis and Design

Schedule Feasibility
• This area of feasibility seeks to find out
if the proposed system can be
completed in the timeframe requested.
• Inadequate scheduling of the project
can cause the system to be developed
incorrectly.

Business System Analysis and Design

When is a proposed project
Feasible?
• A project is feasible IF and ONLY IF all
four areas of feasibility are feasible.
• If the project is feasible, the feasibility
report is written and given to
management for their approval.
• If management approves then the
systems analyst can move on to the
next phase of SDLC.
