MINERALS ARE LIKE EVERY THING ON
EARTH ARE CLASSIFIED IN TO GROUPS
ACCORDING CERTAIN PROPERTIES .
MINERAL GROUPS
We have Thousands of different minerals on earth , to make it easy to study geologists
classified them in to groups .
SILICATES
• Minerals that contain silicon and oxygen, and usually one or more additional elements .
• Silicates make up approximately 96 percent of the minerals present in Earth’s crust.
• The two most common minerals, feldspar and quartz, are silicates.
• The basic building block of the silicates is the silicon-oxygen tetrahedron .
WHAT IS TETRAHEDRON ?
• A tetrahedron:
(plural , tetrahedra) is a geometric solid having four sides that are
equilateral triangles, resembling a pyramid .
• The differences in silicate minerals are due to the differences in the
arrangement of their silicon-oxygen tetrahedra.
• Certain types of asbestos consist of weakly bonded double chains of tetrahedra, while
mica consists of weakly bonded sheets of tetrahedra.
Asbestos Mica
CARBONATES
• Carbonates are minerals composed of one or more metallic
• elements and the carbonate ion CO3 . ( Some -2
carbonates have distinctive colorations )
Examples of carbonates
Calcite Rhodochrosite
• Carbonates are the primary minerals found in rocks such as limestone and marble.
Limestone Marble
OXIDES
• Oxides are compounds of oxygen and a metal.
• Hematite (Fe O2 ) and
3
magnetite (Fe O ) are common
4
iron oxides
3
• and good sources of iron.
Underground mining
Open-pit mines
What makes a ruby more valuable than mica?
• Gems : are valuable minerals that are prized for their rarity and beauty. They are very
hard and scratch resistant.
• Gems such as rubies, emeralds, and diamonds are cut, polished, and used for jewelry.
Because of their rareness, rubies and emeralds are more valuable than diamonds.
