THE MUSEUM OF TRIBAL HERITAGE, BHOPAL, MP

● The museum has 6 galleries to show the diversities of 7 tribes.


● The gathering space tends to be part of the integration core of the gallery. And by being most directly accessible, it
SPACES :
attracts higher movement and maximizes the opportunities for co-presence and encounter. However, these properties do
not seem to determine the shape of the gathering space.
● The main axis organizes the whole layout and links the sub cycles on each side. But as these are not interconnected,
and circulation choices are restricted on the local scale, people have to return to the main axis regularly and in a certain
order. it also works as the way back, further reinforces its role as an ordering device and maybe contributes to its
dominating presence.
● The Tribal Museum offers the opportunity to identify the possibility of relating space and display layout in which, the
exhibition layout exploits the qualities of the setting in order to maximize the impact of the objects.
● Spaces : Administration, workshops, exhibition gallery, library, auditorium, other amenities.

MAINTENANCE : ● A maintenance room of 50 sqm is provided for a design capacity of 100 people.

SERVICES : ● A Janitor room, store, housekeeping centre, high tension control room, HVAC room has
been provided
● A separate circulation path for staff is provided to access the service areas

● The way of displaying tribes and different cultures. People can touch the sculptures. They can feel the material.
OTHER ADVANTAGES : ● All the sculptures and other show casing things were created by the tribal people themselves using the basic and old techniques.
● Instead of conservation lab there was a warehouse made for the restoration of the displays and the sculptures.
● Large and bigger halls provide the sufficient space to display big things and yet making the circulation easy.
● Galleries are spaces along a fixed path to make sure the visitors do not wander.
● Artistically designed landscape.
● The main strategy was to utilize the skill sets of the tribal artisans in harmony with the architecture of the museum.

● Architecture of the building does not involve local materials, only the facade of it does.
DISADVANTAGES : ● Height of the gallery is triple height and it creates complications while creating the gallery.
● Some of the galleries have full height wall which becomes a drawback, but to rectify it, glass colours are used to allow soft sunlight.

● SITE CONTEXT PLAN : Built on a site of seven acres, the galleries are raised above the ground on
columns, forming a continuous, multileveled veranda, following the contours of the sloping, rocky terrain.

BUILT FORM AND MATERIALS : Pedestrian


● The museum is built with a certain type of built fabric by which the tribals identify themselves with it.
● Inspired by tribal geometry, aesthetics, materials, shapes and forms. Vehicular
● The structure is built of steel tubes, castellated girders, and steel rods fabricated into intricate trusses.
● The roofs are made of half-round tiles, galvalume sheets and concrete with a topping of grass and
groundcover.
● Walls are made up of local stone and left exposed.
● Other walls are made up of brick plastered with crushed stone on the outside and mud plaster on the
inside.
● The plant material is composed of largely local forest species.
● The landscape is designed to collect and store rain water, to be used for both cooling and irrigating the
green roof, and gardens.
