HERODOTUS
- The first travel writer
- Herodotus's eye-witness accounts indicate that
he travelled in Egypt in association with
Athenians, probably some time after 454 BC or
possibly earlier, after an Athenian fleet had

Persians ,Assyrians and Egyptians travelled in an

Dark Ages
- Massive forests with wild animals and obscure, long
roads are some of the place travelers encounter during
the Dark Ages. Only bravery can overcome the
challenges travelers meet in the road. - - Travelling
centuries ago was done by walking or riding a horse.

Transporting was gradual and took months to arrive in
the destination.
The Middle Ages
- The period between the fall of Rome and the
Renaissance is known as the Middle Ages,
approximately between 500 A.D. and 1508 A.D. It is
also known as the ages.
- The fall of Rome led to the decline of trade and the
economy in general and decrease in the desire to travel.
RENAISSANCE
- guides took more demanding role-that of an
educator or a mentor in addition to the role of
protector – when the Grand tour become a
fashion as a rite of passage for sons of well-to-do
Europeans.

- A carefully appointed guide served as the young
man’s tutor and chaperone as he went on a
journey through a prescribed route from the
England through France, Germany, Austria,
Switzerland, to Italy, which was the final
destination. After which, the student would return
and be welcomed home as gentlemen. (Cruz
2008, 14)
MODERN AGES
- No evidence exists of organized training for
guides before the 20th Century other than
the company training given by the Thomas
Cook Travel Agency (Wei Hu 2007).

competition with each other for the
business that tourist bring in the 1930s.
