Experimental Research and

Non-experimental Research
Discuss these questions with a pair:
Name some famous and great inventions
you have known since birth. What make you
say they are great? How do you think did the
inventors come to discover the value or
greatness of their creations?
Definition of Experimental Research
It is a quantitative research that treats or
deals with the subject of the research in a
definite or exact manner and determines the
extent of the effects or influence of the
treatment on the subject, then discovers the
causes of such effects.
It could be either laboratory research or
field research.
Two groups that are involved in any
experimental research:
1. Experimental group – the one which the treatment
or influence is applied
2. Control group – the one which does not receive any
treatment

* Subjects involved in these type of research are chosen

randomly or selected by chance.
Two categories of experimental research:
1. True experimental research – absolutely uses random
selection in determining who among the participants
should compose the experimental group or the
control group
2. Quasi- experimental research – adopts a comparative
technique in choosing the subjects. The experimental
group is not chosen randomly but matched or
compared with another group whom the researcher
believed as having the same characteristics as the
experimental group under treatment.
Definition of Non-Experimental Research
Non-Experimental Research is a way of
finding out truths about a subject by
describing the collected data about such
subject and determining their relationships
or connections with one another.
Any treatment or condition is not involve in
this type of research. But there is a
measuring of variables.
Characteristics of a Non - Experimental Research
1. it is incapable of establishing cause-effect
relationships; by itself, it is able, if it takes place in
conjunction with the other experimental and quasi-
experimental research methods.
2. It involves various ways of data analysis:
Primary – analysis of data collected by the
researcher himself
Secondary – examination of data collected by other
people
Meta – analysis – analysis of data expressed
numerically.
Characteristics of a Non - Experimental Research

3. It uses research method that is applicable to both

quantitative and qualitative data.

4. It collects data through survey, observation, historical

studies, case studies, documentary analysis, and so on.
(Suter, 2012; Srantakos, 2013)
What is Survey Research?
It is a method of research that aims at knowing what a
big number of people think and feel about some
sociological issues.
It is the most used non-experimental research in the
field of Sociology, Psychology and Humanities.
It is usually used to study issues affecting a large
population.
It requires data-gathering techniques such as
interview, questionnaire, on-line survey and telephone
interview.
Thank you for listening
Fill in the blank with the correct answer.
True experimental and _______ are the two types of
experimental research. _______ selection of subjects
happen in true experimental research; purposive
selection occurs in a _______. Another basis of ________
experimental research is ________ the experiment is
done. If the study happens in a place surrounded by
walls, it is a _________ but if it is _______ it is a field
experiment. Actually, the only thing that makes the two
types of experimental research ______ from each other
is the method of ______ the subjects. If the selection is
randomized, it is definitely a _______.
Thank you for answering the
quiz with all honesty. 
Write down all words in the list that can operate as variables in
any research study
water guardian angel
skills life plans
ghost class size
experience academic grades
world aspirations
dreams textbooks
reading comprehension economic status
voice mental pictures
handwriting physical exercise
Identify the independent and dependent
variables in each research problem.
1. How does logical thinking develop critical thinking?
2. What are the effects of Koreanovelas on Filipino
viewers?
3. In what way does collaborative learning increase
communicative competence?
4. To what extent does texting decrease students’
grammatical competence?
5. What corrupt practices trigger off one’s resignation?
