 Rizal decided to leave the country not just to
complete his medical studies in Europe.
 The purpose of his voyage was to make a name for
himself in the realm of journalism, to observe and
study European society and to prepare himself
for the task of liberating the Filipinos from
Spanish tyranny.
 He stayed in Barcelona for over a month. From
Barcelona, he moved to Madrid, where he enrolled
in philosophy and letters and obtained a licentiate
in medicine at the Universidad Central de Madrid.

 He also managed to continue his passion for painting
and writing and studying European languages.
 Despite of Rizal’s hectic schedule, he found time to
associate with Pedro Paterno, Graciano Lopez Jaena,
Gregorio Sanciano, Juan Luna, Felix Hidalgo,
Marcelo del Pilar and others.
 He joined the Circulo Hispano Filipino. It is an
association of Spaniards and Filipinos who gather in
a house to discuss things related to the Philippines.
 The Circulo was a way to open the liberal minds of
Filipino intellectuals to the difference between life
in the conservative Philippines and Spain, where the
exchange of ideas is very liberal.
 After a few months, due to Rizal's intellect and
commitment to his task, he met more people and
made friends who supported him in his goals.

 August 8,1887 - first returned after five years in
Europe, Dr. Jose Rizal, returned in Calamba, Laguna.
But his life was in danger at that time because of
his novel, Noli Me Tangere.

 A couple a month he leaves the country to escape.

 He was returned to the Philippines for a second time. Dr.
