TOPIC 1: THE
CONCEPT OF
ENTREPRENEURSHI
P
ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Entrepreneurship is a way of life and being an
entrepreneur means different things to other people,
there is an agreement that we are talking a kind of
behavior and mind-set that includes initiative taking, the
organizing and reorganizing of social and economic
mechanisms to bundle resources in innovative ways
and the acceptance of risks, uncertainty and/or the
potential failure (Shapero, 1975).
Entrepreneurs help bolster economic development and
their enterprise becomes the backbone of the economy
because they create jobs, and invent products or
services that can make the world a better place.
Entrepreneurship can be defined as the capacity
and willingness to develop organize and manage a
business venture along with any of its risks in order
to make a profit.
The most obvious example of entrepreneurship is
the starting of new businesses
An entrepreneur is an individual who takes
initiative to bundle resources in innovative ways
and is willing to bear the risk and/or uncertainty to
act
Being an entrepreneur today:
 Involves creation process.
 Requires devotion of time and effort.
 Involves rewards of being an entrepreneur. Requires
assumption of necessary risks
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ENTREPRENEUR’S ACTIONS AND
ENTREPRENEURIAL MIND-SET?
An entrepreneur’s actions are the behavior in
response to a judgmental decision under
uncertainty about a possible opportunity for profit
while entrepreneurial mind-set involves the
ability to rapidly sense, act, and mobilize even
under uncertain conditions.
Types of Entrepreneurs and their
Challenges
 INNOVATORS are the types of entrepreneurs who come up with
completely new ideas and turn them into viable businesses.
 HUSTLERS often start small and think about effort – as opposed
to raising capital to grow their businesses; focus on starting
small with the goal of becoming bigger in the future
 IMITATORS are the types of entrepreneurs who copy certain
business ideas and improve upon them
 RESEARCHER ENTREPRENEURS usually believe in starting a
business that has high chances of succeeding because they
have put in detailed work to understand all aspects
 BUYER ENTREPRENEURS will identify a business and assess
its viability, proceed to acquire it and find the most suitable
person to run and grow it

TOPIC 2:
LEADERSHIP
ORGANIZATION
Leadership may be defined as the act of
influencing others to work toward a goal. Leaders
exist at all levels of an organization.
A leader cannot lead without an organization
because organizations composed of individuals or
groups working together to achieve a common
goal or purpose.
Enterprises to be able to achieve financial growth
and maintain its competitive advantage,
entrepreneurs must be able to adapt effective
leadership style
What Makes a Leader Effective?
They are responsible for their teams‘ or
company‘s success and failure.
When people and organizations fail, managers
and business leaders are often viewed as
responsible.
“Great leaders are born, not made.”
A good leader has to have a purpose that is
larger than she is and the balanced personality
and skills to put that purpose into action.
Qualities of effective leader can be
enumerated as follows:
Passion. An effective leader is a person with a
passion for a cause that is larger than they are
Holder of Values. Leadership implies values. A
leader must have values that are life giving to
society. It is the only kind of leadership we need.
Vision. This is a bit different than passion, but in
other ways it isn‘t separable.
Creativity. One has to try to think out of the box to
have good visions and to come up with effective
strategies that will help advance the vision.
Intellectual Drive and Knowledge. A leader has
to be a student. In general it is hard for a leader to
be around enough other leaders to pick this up just
through discussion.
Confidence and Humility Combined. No matter
how creative and bright one is, often the best ideas
and thinking are going to come from someone else
Communicator. A leader must have good
communication skills to be able to speak or write in
a way to convince others that they should follow
along, join the team, get on board.
Planner/Organizer. Someone who can see what
needs to be done and help the team plan and
organize the getting it done.
Interpersonal Skills. Leaders must have the
ability to act in an interpersonally competent
manner, yet they also need to learn the
techniques of good listening, honest and open
communication, delegating, conflict resolution
skills, etc., to actually get work done and keep the
whole movement/organization/project together.
TOPIC 3:
ENTREPRENURIA
L LEADERSHIP
Roebuck (2004) defines Entrepreneurial leadership
as "organizing a group of people to achieve a
common goal using proactive entrepreneurial
behavior by optimizing risk, innovating to take
advantage of opportunities, taking personal
responsibility and managing change within a dynamic
environment for the benefit of [an] organization“
Entrepreneurial leadership is effectively using the
skills associated with successful individual
entrepreneurs and applying those within the
environment of a larger organization.
The Difference between Leadership and
Entrepreneurship Leadership
Leadership is one of the key concepts of management
function. It is very crucial in the organizational success
and it can be exhibited by leaders in many various ways
depending on their leadership behavior and styles.
Leadership can be defined as the process of leading,
directing, guiding, supervising, coaching, and
motivating diverse people in the organization to work
enthusiastically.
Entrepreneurial leadership on the other hand, is one
can associate entrepreneurs with leadership functions
such as providing vision to the development of a new
product, service, or organization.
VISION, PROBLEM-SOLVING,
DECISION-MAKING, RISK-TAKING
AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES.
A leader has to be entrepreneurial as well. It has
been written that entrepreneurial leadership deals
with concepts and ideas, and these are often
related to problems that are not of an
organizational nature instead, they tend to be
individual‘s characteristics or behaviors. These
include vision, problem solving, decision-making,
risk taking, and strategic initiatives
VISION. Basically the dream, the goal, the target of an
entrepreneur for his/her company. A vision implies a
capability construct. This capability construct is
determined by many factors including managerial
vision, competence and capacity, logistic and
technological profiles, as well as the financial resource
access of the firm.
PROBLEM-SOLVING. The process of using innovation
and creative solutions to close that gap by resolving
societal , business or technological problems. Effective
leadership must solve, or face, problems quickly and
forcefully, regardless of their nature.
 DECISION-MAKING. Involves identifying a goal,
getting the relevant and necessary information and
weighing the alternatives in order to make a decision.
If a leader avoids this responsibility, subordinates will
poorly judge him or her and the organization will suffer
accordingly.
 RISK-TAKING. The act of doing something that
involves danger or risk in order to achieve a goal.
Inability to deal with uncertainty precludes an
organization from achieving its goals.
 STRATEGIC INITIATIVES. An organization translates
its goals and visions into practice. Leaders must have
a vision and plan for beyond a year or two in order to
achieve long-term success (El-Namaki, 1992).
Qualities of an Entrepreneurial Leader
Good Communication Skills - An entrepreneurial
leader should be able to clearly disseminate their
plans and ideas between departments and levels.
 Visionary - should have a clear vision on where he
wants to go and how to help the organization get
there. They communicate their vision to the team
and work together to make that vision a reality.
 Supportive - realize the importance of initiative and
reactiveness. Leaders should also focus on
developing the strength of their team.
Qualities of an Entrepreneurial Leader
 Self-belief - should believe and have confidence in
themselves from years of experience from their
failures and learning.
 Share Success - not take all the credit when the
organization succeeds in something. They should
acknowledge the efforts of their teammates, too.
 Involved - spend time among their employees and
monitor their work and personal challenges.
 Honest- an entrepreneurial leader can be seen as
trustworthy by their employees.
 Persevere - they lead their team to keep going and
keep striving. “True entrepreneurs simple don‘t quit,
they keep going until they find what they‘re looking
for.”
Qualities of an Entrepreneurial Leader
 Learner - can able to create a learning environment not only for
their own, but also for the whole organization. They should
encourage their team to improve their knowledge, expand their
experiences, and come up with creative solutions to problems.
 Innovative – entrepreneurial leader should take the lead in
creating new things with value.
 Future-oriented - Because entrepreneurs are focused on
moving forward, they are always looking toward the future.
Entrepreneurs are very goal-oriented and know exactly what
they want. They set their goals and everything they do is aimed
at achieving those goals.
 Passionate - Perhaps the most important characteristic for
entrepreneurs, passion is essential to any business owner or
working professional's success. Without passion, there is no
reason for your work and no drive to do it
ARTICLE: WHY ACTIVE LISTENING
IS A CRITICAL SKILL FOR
FOUNDERS AND ENTREPRENEURS

What is Active Listening? Active listening basically means that,

when you try to communicate, you stop trying to multitask. You
focus on what the other person says, rather than formulating what
you‘re going to say and impatiently waiting until they‘re done to
respond. Your main goal is to pay attention, read between the lines
and ensure that you really understand what the other person has
told you.
Asking questions is also an essential part of active listening. It
shows your conversation partner that you are interested in what
they have to say and actually want the conversation to keep going.
It also offers a way for you to get clarification or access details.
ARTICLE: WHY ACTIVE LISTENING
IS A CRITICAL SKILL FOR
FOUNDERS AND ENTREPRENEURS
Why is active listening so important for
leaders? - No matter your industry or company
mission, as a leader, everything you do ultimately
relies on the interpersonal relationships you form
with your team, stakeholders, customers and
others. Without active listening, these relationships
are much harder to develop, because you might
not understand the problems at hand or be able to
acknowledge them in a positive, reassuring way.
ARTICLE: WHY ACTIVE LISTENING
IS A CRITICAL SKILL FOR
FOUNDERS AND ENTREPRENEURS
Genuine interest makes active listening easy
Active listening is just like any other skill in that it
takes practice to get it right. Strategies like finding
a distraction-free area for your conversation,
jotting down a note or two and making good eye
contact can all help you stay present in the
moment and take in the speaker‘s information
better. But perhaps the biggest tip for good active
listening is simply trying to be genuinely
interested in what the other person is saying.
Communication is an integral part of everything
we do — at work and beyond. And to successfully
communicate, we must actively listen. As a
leader, it makes the difference between success
and failure, which is why practicing active
listening and honing it until it‘s second nature is
so important.
