SAFe Agile Framework:

1. What is safe
SAFe Vs Agile:
Seven core competencies in Safe:
 Team and Technical Agility:

Agile team is group of 5-10 members who are core for development uses scrum/Kanban to deliver in a timeboxed
timeframe in iteration which is basic scrum model which involves different ceremonies

SM is coach of team and facilitates these teams

In an Enterprise multiple Agile teams needs to work together the combination of these teams is called ART (Agile
Release Train) having 150-200 people

Deliver right volume at right time

These work in timeboxed event called as Program Increment

PI follows similar ceremonies as teams in the beginning of PI, PI planning is conducted facilitated by RTE (Release
Train Engineer) Which is the event for 2days

PM provides vision , System Architect provides vision , Program board is used to visualized work.
 Agile product Delivery :

Teams meet identified problems identifies the solutions which are Desirable , Viable , Feasible and Sustainable

ART builds CI/CD procedures and Dev ops procedures for the continuous development

 Enterprise Solution Delivery:

Sometimes single ART is not enough to deliver larger solution where ESD comes to picture.

A solution train is used to coordinate multiple ARTS and suppliers to deliver larger solutions

SA and STE are involved

 Lean and Portfolio Management :

In order to align strategy and Execution LPM provides way to create strategic themes + portfolio align with
enterprise strategy
Also helps these align around value and value streams to avoid problems with cost accounting
 Organization Agility:

OA provides tools and change direction quickly as needed. Organizing and reorganizing as per change and need

 Continuous learning :

Continuous learning based on previous learnings

 Lean-Agile Leadership:

Leaders having lean and agile mindset by Embody + Teach + Exhibit to make this whole cycle possible

Timeboxed events :

Events along with PIs:

Program Increment Planning meeting :

 The first and foremost ceremony essential in SAFe framework which is conducted for two days as per an
agenda.

Glossary :

 SAFe : Scaled Agile Framework

 PI : Program Increment
 5 Iterations = 4 Development Iteration + 1 Innovation and Planning Iteration
 IP : Innovation and Planning
 ART : Agile Release Train
 RTE : Release Train Engineer who facilitates ART PI planning meeting
 STE : Solution Train Engineer who facilitates ST PI planning
 ST : Solution Train combination of multiple ARTs for larger level of solutions
 Feature : Service provided by systems which addresses stakeholders requirement
 Capability : Similar to Feature which denotes higher capability
 Iteration Review : Cadence based event where team reviews at the end of iteration and adjusts backlog based on
feedback similar to Sprint review in scrum
 Supplier :Supplier is an internal or external organization that develops and delivers components, subsystems, or
services that help Solution Trains and Agile Release Trains provide Solutions to their Customers.
 Enabler :An Enabler supports the activities needed to extend the Architectural Runway to provide future
business functionality. These include exploration, architecture, infrastructure, and compliance. Enablers are
captured in the various backlogs and occur throughout the Framework.
 SM : Scrum Master who facilitates scrum activities and facilitates scrum at team level
Glossary :

 SOS : Scrum of scrums a representator from each scrum team meets to understand any blockers or integration
related issues with other scrum team
 Story : Is a basic artifacts used to define system behaviour in agile development
 Customer : Integral part of Lean – Agile development and ultimate economic buyer of solution
 Business Owner : Critical group of 3-5 who are responsible for ROI , governance for value delivered by ART.
