0 What is the difference between 5
similar and dissimilar fractions?
1 Similar Fraction Dissimilar Fraction 6
Similar fractions are fractions Dissimilar fractions are

2 7
that have the same fractions that have different
denominators. denominators.

Examples: Examples:

9
How do we reduce fractions in the lowest term or
in their simplest form?
Divide the numerator and the denominator by their Greatest Common
Factor or GCF.
Factors of 6 are 1 and 6.
Example: Factors of 12 are 2, 6, 3 and 4
Their GCF is 6.

divide both by 6 is equal to

How do we find the Least Common Denominator
(LCD) of fractions?
Find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of the given denominators
through listing method, factor tree, or continuous division.

Example: Find the LCD of and

5 = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35

7 = 7, 14, 21, 28, 35
Their LCD is 35.
How do we change improper fraction to mixed
number?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient will be the
whole number, the remainder will be the numerator, and the divisor
will be the denominator.
Example: = 94=2 remainder 1
=2
How do we change mixed number to improper
fraction?
Multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the product to
the numerator. Copy the denominator.

Example: 2 = 4x2+1 =
Let’s try this!
Nana is good at cooking. She sees to it that she cooks rice cakes and
cassava cakes to be sold in the community. These cakes use milk. For
the rice cake, it needs 2 cups and 1 for the cassava cake. How many
cups of milk does she need?
0 Here are the steps to follow in 5
1 adding fractions…
• Add the numerators
6
2 • Add the whole numbers

• Write the sum of the numerators over the common denominator

7
3
• Change your answer to the lowest term if possible 8
9
Let’s try this!
Nana found out that the cooked rice is too sticky so she reduced 1
cups from the original amount of the coconut milk which is 2 cups.
How many cups of milk did she use in the newly-baked rice cake?
0 Here are the steps to follow in 5
subtracting fractions…
1 • Rename the dissimilar fractions as similar fractions by using LCD 6
2 • Subtract the numerators

• Subtract the whole numbers

7
3 • Write the difference of the numerators over the common
denominator 8
• Change your answer to the lowest term if possible 9
When do we add using regrouping?
We use regrouping when adding fractions with different denominators.

Example: 2 + 1 = 2 + 1 = 3
When do we subtract using regrouping?

We use regrouping when subtracting fractions when the fraction in

minuend is greater than the fraction in subtrahend.
Borrow one from the whole number and convert
Example: 8 - 5 it into a fraction using the same number as the
denominator.
For this example, 8 will be 7 + = 7 .

Example: 7 - 5 = 7 - 5 = 2

Ben collects marbles and keeps these in a box. of the
marbles in the box are red and of them are blue. If of the
marbles in a box are red, blue, and green, what fraction of
the marble is green?
Homework
Carlo climbed a coconut tree. He climbed of the tree and
slipped back of the total height. He then climbed of the
three again. What part of the tree is Carlo located now?
Let’s try this!
In a Science experiment, Carla observes that bean sprout
