THE USE OF ER

• When adjectives or adverbs are one or two syllables, the ending -er is used

• Today is colder than yerterday. (Hoy hace más frío que ayer)

• China is bigger than Italy. (China es más grande que Italia)

• She is younger than her brother. (Ella es más joven que su hermano)

• He is older than his friend. (Él es más viejo que su amigo)

• I stayed longer than I expected. (Yo me quedé más tiempo del que esperaba)
 THE USE OF THE MORE
• MORE is used when adjectives or adverbs have more than two syllables, THAN is also written after the
adjective or adverb.

• Gold is more valuable than silver. (El oro es más valioso que la plata)

• His car is more expensive than my car. (Su automóvil es más caro que mi automóvil)

• My brother prepares his homework more carefully than his classmates. (Mi hermano prepara su tarea más
cuidadosamente que sus compañeros)

• She is more ambitious than her sister. (Ella es más ambiciosa que su hermana)

• I am more intelligent than you. (Yo soy más inteligente que tú)
 DENYING WITH AS .. AS
My horse can not run as fast as a car. (Mi caballo no puede correr tan rápido como un carro)

I don't speak English as well as my teacher. ( No hablo ingles tan bien como mi profesor )

He doesn't play as well as me. (El no juega tan bien como yo)

Carla's sister is not as pretty as her. (La hermana de Carla no es tan bonita como ella )

She´s not singing as loudly as she can. (Ella no canta tan fuerte como puede)

The second race wasn't as easy as the first one. (La segunda carrera no fue tan fácil como la primera)

These new shoes are not nearly as comfortable as my old ones. (Estos zapatos nuevos no son tan cómodos
como los anteriores.)
 IRREGULAR CASES

• Good, better (bueno, mejor)

• Bad, worse (malo, peor)
• Well, better (bien, mejor)
• Badly, worse (mal, peor)
• His idea is better than the last one. (Su idea es mejor que la anterior)
• This contract is worse than the previous one. (Este contrato es peor que el anterior)
• He swims better than his cousin. (Él nada mejor que su primo)
• She drives worse than her sister. (Ella maneja peor que su hermana)
 BE LIKE AND LOOK LIKE
Both expressions are generally used to describe people, both physically and mentally. Be like is for personality description, while
look like is for physical description.

What is Peter like? ¿Cómo es Pedro?

He is very friendly and generous. He is a nice guy. (Es muy amistoso y generoso. Es un buen chico.)

What is the new hotel like? ¿Qué tal el nuevo hotel? (personality)

It’s very big and luxurious. Es muy grande y lujoso.

What does Maria look like? ¿Cómo es María? (appearance)

She is short and pale. She has brown eyes and black hair. Es baja y pálida. Tiene los ojos marrones y pelo negro.

Look like it is also used in expressions and means to look like.

I don’t look like my mom. No me parezco a mi mamá. (appearance)

 SENTENCES WITH LOOKS LIKE
• Oh, it looks like the trophy's gonna be in play (Oh, parece que el trofeo estará en juego)

• Well, it looks like he's talking to someone off camera.

(Bueno, parece que está hablando con alguien fuera de cámara.)

• But now it looks like the surprise is on me. ( Pero ahora parece que la sorpresa es mía.)

• He can climb the tree. (Él puede trepar el árbol.)

 SENTENCES WITH CAN’T
• She can’t stay up all night. (Ella no puede quedarse despierta toda la noche.)
• She can’t walk. (Ella no puede caminar.)

• I can’t play the guitar. (No puedo tocar la guitarra.)

• They can’t hear you. (Ellos no pueden oírte.)

• I can’t end this way. (No puede terminar así.)
