What is weed?
a plant growing out of place

a plant growing where it is not


desired --- plant that is useless,
unwanted and undesirable

a plant that interfere with man or


area of his interest

A plant whose virtues have not yet


been discovered
These definitions indicate that any
species at any one time can be
considered a weed.

A rice plant in an onion field will be


considered a weed

Since no plant is absolutely useless


at any one time, a weed can also be
defined as a plant whose potentials
for damage outweigh its potentials
for usefullness.
Weeds may be viewed in both a
general sense :

as any unwanted plants under a


particular set of circumstances
(human-centered), and

as specific species which have a


particular set of characteristics which
make them highly successful
(adapted) in certain environment
(species-centered).
Those two aspects of weeds have
been drawn together and used to
identify and describe what many
people consider to be the world’s
worst crop weeds

Some 200 or so plant species are


estimated to cause 90% of the weed
losses to world food production
Whether you realise it or not, weeds
are plants familiar to you and can be
found at:
open field, road sides, fence, ditch,
ponds, lakes, river banks, backyard,
farm, forest, etc.
Effects of weeds on agricultural crops :

land preparation
resource competition & allelopathy
host for pest & diseases
harvesting obstacles
reduce the quality of yield (weeds
& weed seeds)
clogging water ways
rail ways and side-road invasion
reduce O2 in ponds & lakes
Hazard of health (pollens, asthma)
aesthetics
Beneficial effects of weeds :

may provide some ground cover &


prevent erosion of fragile soils in time of
drought
seeds & foliage may be of some feed
value for livestock
provide nectar for honey production
may protect newly establishing pasture
seedlings from being grazed
‘wildflowers’ that attract tourist industry
some aquatic weeds are able to remove
excess nutrients & other pollutants from
domestic and industrial effluent
