WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF
PROPHETISM IN THE OLD TESTAMENT?
◈ The basic purpose of prophetism was to
call the chosen people to constantly align
themselves with the will of Yahweh.
◈ Prophetism was an established divine
institution that reminded the Israelites to
be loyal, faithful, and obedient to the
covenant they had with God. 6
WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF
PROPHETISM IN THE OLD TESTAMENT?
◈ Hence, the prophets were called to
speak God’s message to His people.

WHO WERE THE PROPHETS?
◈ Prophets were men called by God to
speak His words to his people.
◈ They were not “fortune tellers.”
◈ Prophets interpreted their present
situation in the sight of God and telling
them what He would do with them. 8
WHO WERE THE PROPHETS?
◈ Most of all, the prophets called the
people back to the Covenant.
◈ For despite God’s fidelity, Israel’s
history is a series of infidelity.

◈ Prophets denounced kings and other
rulers of the chosen people when the
said kings and rulers sinned against
Yahweh, in particular, the sin of
idolatry.

when the chosen people, especially the
kings and rulers, stopped respecting
them and ignored their importance in
their lives.

◈ Above all, the prophets proclaimed ahead of

time God’s plan of saving His people by
zealously preparing His people for the most
awaited coming of Jesus, the Messiah, who
would usher the great day of salvation.

◈ The Old Testament is the living Word of

God, “sharper than any two-edged sword.”
◈ Old Testament Word is necessary for us
today, and throughout or lives to understand
Christ our savior more fully.
