Lesson 5: INTERNAL

STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH

BUENA P. CABRERA
SUBJECT TEACHER
OBJECTIVES:

1. Discuss the different layers of the Earth;

2. Differentiate the layers of the Earth from each other.
INTRODUCTION (5 mins.):

 Define in your own words the following terms:

1. Crust 6. Moho
2. Mantle 7. Seismic Wave
3. Core 8. Convection
4. Lithosphere 9. Plate tectonics
5. Asthenosphere
INTRODUCTION (5 mins.):

 Definition of Terms:
 Crust –thin, outermost layer of the Earth; continental and oceanic
 Mantle –middle layer of the Earth between crust and core; makes up
about 83% of Earth’s interior
 Core –innermost layer of the Earth; outer core is liquid state, inner
core is in solid state
INTRODUCTION (5 mins.):

 Lithosphere –rigid outer layer of the Earth which is made up of

brittle crust and upper mantle
 Asthenosphere –layer of weak, ductile rock in the mantle situated
below the lithosphere
 Moho –boundary separating the crust and the mantle
 Seismic wave –an elastic shock wave the travels outward in all
directions from an earthquake source
INTRODUCTION (5 mins.):

 Convection –transfer of heat by mass movement or circulation of a

substance
 Plate tectonics –theory which proposes that the Earth’s crust and
upper mantle to be composed of several large, thin and relatively
rigid plates that move relative to one another
MOTIVATION ( mins.):

 I need five (5) volunteers

 Looking at the globe, write and sketch on the board
a description of what you think is the inside of the
Earth. Try to be more specific or detailed and label
them.
INSTRUCTION/DELIVERY (10 mins):

P- (primary) Wave, travels faster thus arrives

first, can pass through solids, liquids, gases

S- (secondary) Wave, travels slower, can pass

through solids only

#both are used to determine the epicenter of

the earthquake
#hotter areas slows the wave
EARTH’S LAYERED STRUCTURE:

CRUST MANTLE CORE

EVALUATION (10 mins):
ASSIGNMENT:

Prepare for a long test next meeting.
