Advantages and Disadvantages of Processed Foods, Smoked & Grilled Foods

Advantages of Processed Foods


1.) Foods are usually processed to kill harmful bacteria or other microorganisms,
to make them safer and for longer shelf life.
2.) Processed Foods are preserved in cans, bottles and jars that are airtight,
so the food packed inside is free of bacteria.
3.) Processed foods are easy to get, as they are available in all seasons and at all stores.
4.) Processed foods like pre-cut vegetables and meat are quality convenience foods for busy people
and for those who can’t visit a faraway market to buy vegetables and meat.

Disadvantages of Processed Foods


1.) Food processing removes some of the nutrients, vitamins and fiber present in the food.
2.) Processed foods are obtained from laboratories and not nature.
3.)The foods are genetically modified and may cause gastrointestinal disorders,
infertility and can damage your organs.
4.) Frequent intake of processed foods can make people become angry and irritable.
Consumption of natural whole foods can help level out your mood, sustain energy levels
and leave you feeling content and relaxed.
5.) The trans fats and sugar present in processed items can cause inflammation,
an unhealthy condition that leads to asthma.

Advantages of Smoked Foods


1.)Certain Food bacteria are killed and slows down the growth of others
2.) Foods are prevented from rancid, from forming molds on fermented sausages.
3.) Food’s shelf life are extended.
4.) Food’s smell and flavor are enhanced and making them appetizing.
5.) Smoked Foods appear redder and more appealing, makes the meat shine.

Disadvantages of Smoked Foods


1.) Smoked foods contain carcinogens.
2.) The process of food smoking contaminates food with Polycyclic aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
which increases gastrointestinal cancer risk when such foods are consumed.
3.) Causes loss of some nutrients, particularly Thiamin & Vitamin C.
4.) Sulfur dioxide is sometimes added to dried fruits to retain vitamin C,
which can be sensitive to some individuals.
5.) Longer shelf life of fresh foods can lead to greater nutrient loss than if eaten sooner after harvesting.

Advantages of Grilled Foods:


1.) Grilled foods are less fat.
2.) Vegetables & meat hold onto their vitamins, minerals and nutrients better when grilled.
3.) Potential harmful chemicals are removed during grilling.

Disadvantages of Grilled Foods:


1.) Eating grilled food means that you are eating high-fat meats like burgers, hotdogs and sausages,
which means you are eating more saturated fats, calories and cholesterol than you might realize.
2.) Overdoing cooking time in such foods may cause health concern. Burnt and charred foods contains
carcinogens that are bad for the health. And burned food does not taste good.
3.) Heavenly tasty char leads to the formation of advanced glycation end products,
which causes diabetes, heart trouble, Alzheimer’s, etc.
