DURGAVATI DEVI

• DURGAVATI DEVI, Popularly known as DURGA BHABHI , was an Indian revolutionary and
freedom fighter. She was wife of Hindustan Republician Association (HSRA). She was one of few
women revolutionaries who actively participated in armed revolution against British. She is known
for having accompanied BHAGAT SINGH as she helped him to escape from Lahore after Saunders
killing. Since she was wife of another HSRA member other members of HSRA referred to her as
Bhabhi. She was also known as Durga Bhabhi. She and Bhagat Singh duped as a couple and
ecaped to Calcutta, with Rajguru as a servant.
HISTORICAL EVENT – DANDI MARCH

• The Salt March , led by MAHATMA GANDHI on 12 March 1930, began with around 80 people , but
as more and more people joined in for the 390 km long journey, it grew into a strong force of
50,000 peoples. On 12 March Gandhi Ji embarked a historic Salt March from Sabarmati Aashram
in Gujarat (Ahmedabad) to the village of Dandi in the coastal area to protest against the Tax led on
Salt. The significant march came to be known as Dandi March or Salt March. The March was of 24
days and non-violent in nature, is historically significant as it led to the mass Civil Disobedience
Movement.
HISTORICAL PLACE - AMRITSAR

• Amritsar is a historical event in the freedom movement of India as Massacre held here on 13 April
1919 which is known as Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. A large peaceful crowd gathered at Jallianwala
Bagh to protest against the Rowlatt Act. General Dyer ordered his army to attack on crowd of
unarmed Indians in an open field. Almost 379 peoples died and 1200 were injured in the
indiscriminating firing. This incident came to known as Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.
