Definition of Neuropsychology assessment
• A branch of clinical psychology that studies how the brain and nervous
system affect how we function on a daily basis

• Uses various assessment methods to ascertain function and dysfunction


and applies this knowledge to evaluate, treat and rehabilitate individuals
with suspected or demonstrated neurological or psychological problems.

• Entails a detailed knowledge of brain anatomy, the role that different


brain areas serve and how these functions are likely to be impacted by
various disorders
History of neuropsychological Assessement
• The first neuropsychological assessment was developed in India was
NIMHANS Neuropsychological assessment by (CR Mukundan &
Murthy 1979)

• It is an adaption of Luria Nebraska neuropsychological assessment

• The validity of this assessment is very good in assessing the


lateralization and localization as compared with CT and operative
findingd (Mukundan et al., 1991)

• The Luria Nebraska battery has been adapted on Indian population by


CIP Ranchi institute

• The AIIMS comprehensive neuropsychological battery in Hindi (Adult


form) is a 160 item neuropsychological battery based on Luria’s
approach

• 10 scales of Luria Nebraska 160 items ( MI-MTV-RARE) Motor,


Intellectual Processes, Memory, Tactile, Visual, Receptive Speech,
Arithmetic, Reading and Expressive Speech

• The child neuropsychological assessment is ranges from 5-15 years of
age

• Assesses Brain dysfunction


Attention
• Focused Attention

• Color Trails 1 & 2

• In the first part the patient is


conveyed to only focus on one color

• In the second part he is conveyed to


say it in an alternating order
Attention
• Sustained Attention:
• Digit Vigilance test:

• Cancel Target numbers (6 & 9)

• Record the time

• Omissions and Commissions


Mental Speed
• Digit Symbol Substitution

• Substitute the symbols


Motor Speed ( Motor Coordination)
• Finger Tapping Test

• Left hand index finger


• 5 trials of 10 seconds

• Break for 30 seconds in between

• Right hand index finger


• 5 trials of 10 seconds

• Average taps for both hands


Fluency
• Phonemic Fluency
• In English, (F,A,S)
• Words beginning from 3 consonants

• Vernacular version ka, pa , ma are used


Category Fluency

• Measures Verbal Fluency

• Controlled Oral word Association test

• Names of birds and animals


Working Memory
• Verbal N back test

• Consonants are randomly placed and spoken aloud


Response Inhibition
• Stroop Test

• Subjects reads the names of the


color

• Second part the colors are named

• Record RT for both and note


down the difference
Set Shifting
• Wisconsin Card Sorting Test
• 128 cards are present
• one set involving number
• one set involving color
• one set involving shape
