The human comfort temperature for Coimbatore ranges from 22 – 27 deg Celsius.
The chart shows the dry bulb
temperature based on monthly
average during different times
of a day.

The chart represents the temperature range for each months.

The comfort zone – at 50% relative humidity is between 22 -
27 deg Celsius in winter and
27 – 30 deg Celsius in winter.
The average annual mean temperature is 27 deg Celsius
The annual average high and low temperatures are 32 and
23 deg Celsius approximately.
The annual recorded high and low temperatures are 37 and
14 deg Celsius.
The chart explains the hourly average dry bulb and wet bulb mean temperatures and radiation
The global horizontal radiation is the amount of shortwave radiation reaching the earth’s surface.
The comfort zone of radiation – 700 to 1100 wh/sq.m
The months of jan to April has high direct normal radiation.
The month march has high direct normal radiation but the time taken to heating is high which is a thermal
lag effect.
The greater the difference between the dry and wet bulb curves, the lower the humidity.
The chart shows the visible direct
illumination for each month.
It is used for daylighting design.
The annual average illumination is
29000 lux approximately.
The illumination during daylit hours
ranges from 1000-60000 lux.

The chart shows the radiation

range for all daylit hours for
each months.
In tilted surface radiation
input the degrees of wall can
be altered to provide the
maximum comfort.
The radiation reflected from
the groud is given as 20%
which is for grass.
The chart shows the dry ulb
temperature ranging from
according to different times of a day
in each month.
The comfort temperature of 22-30
deg Celsius is 70%.

The chart shows the sky cover ranging from total

cloud cover to clear skies for all months.
The months of July and November has high cloud
cover of 70% .
The annual average cloud cover is 60 %
The ground temperature monthly averages
are given with respect to depths 0.5,2.0,4.0
meters.
The annual average temperature is 27 deg
celsius

The dry bulb X relative humditiy helps in

finding the inverse relationship between
temperature and humidity.
The chart shows the wind velocity range
based on months.
The annual mean velocity is 3 m/s
approximately.
The months with high wind velocities are
June to October.

The high wind speed direction is

from south west. The maximum
hours of wind is also from south
west. Thus the prevailing wind
direction is southwest to northeast
(which is predominant direction)
and from northeast to southwest.
The temperature and relative
humidity of wind is also given.
The chart gives an idea of where to
give openings and windows based
on wind for natural ventilation.
The sun shading chart shows the hours that are above the
comfort zone, within the comfort zone and below the
comfort zone for the months of dec 21 to June 21/
June 21 to dec 21.
The input obstructions provided here are two neighboring
structures on ENE and WNW. The distance between the
obstructions and the site are given as 10 m.
Rather than these obstructions window overhangs and fin
walls are needed for shading to provide comfort.

In the sun chart the yellow dots indicate

the comfort zone , the red dots indicate
overheating and the blue dots indicate
heat under the comfort zone.
In passive heating shading must be
provided for areas of over heat and
windows should be fully exposed in
areas with blue dots.
The psychometric chart shows the design strategies for the given location.
The comfort indoors are plotted for all the months from 6 am through 6 pm.
The passive design strategies are selected and analysed.
65.3% of comfortable hours can be provided by selecting these passive
strategies.
The blue lines represent the comfort temperature of 22-27 deg Celsius.
The design strategies must be provided to achieve maximum comfortable
indoors.
DESIGN GUIDELINES BASED ON STRATEGIES

SOLAR GLAZING ADMITS

DIRECT SUNLIGHT INTO A
SPACE FOR PASSIVE
HEATING IN WINTER.
SOLAR GLAZING (FACING THE
EQUATOR) IS SIZED TO ADMIT
ENOUGH SUNLIGHT ON AN
AVERAGE SUNNY WINTER
DAY TO HEAT A SPACE OVER
THE FULL 24-HOUR PERIOD.

IN HOT CLIMATES, AND CLIMATES WITH

HOT SUMMERS, A LIGHT COLORED ROOF
REFLECTS SUNLIGHT, REMAINS COOLER,
OFFSETS CO2 WARMING, AND REDUCES
THE AMOUNT OF HEAT TRANSFERRED TO
THE INTERIOR OF A BUILDING.
COOL ROOFS HAVE SURFACES THAT
REFLECT SUNLIGHT AND EMIT OR
DISCHARGE HEAT EFFICIENTLY, KEEPING
THEM COOLER ON SUNNY DAYS. THE TWO
SURFACE PROPERTIES THAT DETERMINE A
ROOF’S TEMPERATURE ARE SOLAR
REFLECTANCE AND THERMAL EMITTANCE,
WHICH RANGE ON A SCALE FROM 0 TO 1.
THE LARGER THE TWO VALUES ARE, THE
COOLER THE ROOF WILL BE.
MAKE THE ROOF SURFACE A LIGHT COLOR
AND CHOSE A ROOFING MATERIAL THAT
HAS A SURFACE:
SOLAR REFLECTANCE (SR) OF > 0.7; AND
THERMAL EMITTANCE (TE) OF > 0.75.
IN HOT CLIMATES, COOL ROOFS CAN HELP
MITIGATE URBAN HEAT ISLANDS, REFLECT
SOLAR RADIATION BACK TO SPACE, AND
KEEP INDOOR SPACES COMFORTABLE.
