Introduction
Softwoods are conifers and normally have needle-like leaves. They generally have
lower densities and are often light in colour. Softwoods usually grow quicker than
hardwoods and are cheaper, softer and easier to work. Common examples of
softwood include: pine, fir, spruce, larch and cedar.

SOFTWOOD USED FOR
FURNITURE
Pine wood , cedar wood , fir wood , spruce wood , and redwood are the most
common species of softwoods , used in Furniture making.
PINE WOOD
Pine wood is a type of soft wood. Pine wood is most commonly known for its
versatility. Straight grains are found in the pine trees when cut down. There are many
types of pine, including Ponderosa, Sugar, White, and Yellow pines. They are all
relatively soft and great to use for furniture. If country or rustic styles resonate with
you, then pine is a great choice.
CEDAR WOOD
Cedar wood is known for its strong aroma, which is a special feature of cedar wood. The
aroma of cedar wood is a strong that can repel insects and moths from it. Cedarwood is
lighter in weight, with a hard texture. Cedarwood is rot-resistant and is also weather-
resistant It is a great choice for decorative furniture and fencing work. Also for outdoor
elements like patio furniture and outdoor wooden furniture, cedarwood is a great choice.

FIR WOOD
Fir wood is generally known for its great strength, durability, and performance. These
types of wood is extensively used for woodworking and also the primary choice for
construction works. The fir wood does not deform easily as its strength is higher.
Douglas fir is an excellent softwood to use in cabinetry and furniture-making.
SPRUCE WOOD
Spruce wood is a lightweight softwood used for making Ladders, crates, aircraft
works, and ship masts. Like fir wood, spruce wood is also very strong and durable.
The hardness of spruce wood is usually moderate. Generally, fine grains are found in
spruce wood.
REDWOOD
Redwood is a premium quality wood, used for making high-quality and premium
wooden furniture. Redwood trees are very tall. They can grow up to a height of 300 ft.
Superior quality redwood is obtained from the inner part of the tree trunk, known as
the heartwood. The redwood tree contains a chemical that makes it resistant to
insects and weather. The durability of redwood is also great.

DISADVANTAGES
•Density: The lower density of softwood timber means it’s weaker and
less durable, however there are some ‘hard’ softwood options with a
higher density like Juniper and Yew.

•Longevity: Softwood is less suitable for high traffic areas as it does not
wear as well as hardwood over time.

•Fire resistance: Softwoods tend to have poor fire resistance unless

treated
CONCLUSION Softwood is very cheaper and lighter and
easy to cut and shape. Softwoods take
well to finish and adhesive they are a
good option for furniture or cabinet
making, if maintained regularly.
Softwoods are used in making card
products and paper pulp and are mostly
used by the construction industry. About
80% of all timbers come from softwood
which means softwood is four times
common than hardwood.
