MAZEV
Petar Mazev (February 10, 1927 in Kavadarci, March 13, 1993 in
Skopje, Republic of Macedonia) .
He was a Macedonian academic painter who is considered one of
the most important postwar painters who introduced new energy into
contemporary Macedonian art.
He graduated from the Academy of arts in Belgrade in 1953
where he studied under painter Zoran Petrovic. He was professor
at the Faculty of Architecture in Skopje. He had held individual
exhibitions in the United States, China, India, France, Germany,
Italy, Switzerland and other countries. Also he was a member of
the artistic group "Mugri".
Expressionism was a constant presence in his paintings, but
before choosing expressionism, he went through several phases
including his White Phase and Warm Phase. In the mid-1960s,
Mazev started to include in his non-figurative paintings in muted
colours and rendered in dense and grainy impasto with materials
such as burnt wooden plates, glass, scrap-metal sheets, and
sand. In addition to paintings (mostly oil on canvas), he was also
the author of murals, mosaics and ceramic arts.

§ Nikola Martinoski (18 August 1903 – 7 February 1973),
was a fruitful painter. He is considered as a founder of
contemporary Macedonian art. Martinoski is best
known for his painting titled Mother with Child, which,
although first created in the 1930s, was not completed
until the 1960s. He is also known as "The Doctor" for
the many paintings he donated to modern art.
§ Martinoski was born in 1903. He developed an interest in painting at a young age
and attended art classes in the workshop of Dimitar Andonov-Papradinski. Prior to
1921, he was constantly on the move. Finally, Nikola settled down in Bucharest,
Romania and attended the Academy of Fine Arts, now known as the Bucharest
National University of Arts, from which he graduated in 1927. Martinoski spent two
years in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. This period had a major
impact on his life and style as a painter. Martinoski came back to Skopje
brimming with avant-garde ideas about art. He developed a very specific
expressionistic style and started dealing with social themes rather than portraits.
His first individual exhibition was in 1929 in Skopje. Afterwards, he started
exhibiting in other cities such as Belgrade, Zagreb and Paris. While he continued
drawing, painting, and exhibiting, Martinoski also began creating large murals.
Later, he established the Artistic Gallery located in Skopje (now known as the
National Gallery of Macedonia) and won numerous awards.
§ Martinoski was one of the most important people for the development of the
Macedonian culture in the 20th century. He received an award for his life – work
in 1964 and the AVNOJ award in 1967. His home in Kruševo is now a gallery where
a small number of his works are exhibited.
